ok, this may be a silly question and I am prepared to be hung at the stakes for this post but I notice quite a few pickups on the road pulling a 1 to 3 car trailer (sometimes more). is there money to be made doing this? a quick search of "uship" (yes I know) shows cars being offered up at around a dollar a mile on average. there is actually a car right now about 10 miles from me paying $800 for an approx. 800 mile run. kind of thinking out loud I come up with the theory I could probably turn a profit (provided I actually had a 1 or 2 car trailer, which I don't). now I did NOT take into account legal stuff (which IS very important to consider but because I am not an O/O I do not know what the actual costs would be.
Is a dollar a mile per car a good rate? 3 cars which isn't a lot of weight is 3 dollars a mile. this could easily be done with a 3/4 or 1 ton or even a medium duty rig. or am I out to lunch?

You're not going to get $1 a mile for open transport, more like $.50/ mile if you're lucky, oh, and auto transport insurance is one of the highest premiums for commercial transport and you WON'T make a profit running a 1 or 2 car open trailer.

Some car hauling companies usually set a price depending on where the car is picked up and to where it is delivered. (zones)

Most of the 2-3 car haulers I know of around here get their business from the local auctions, or dealer sell off's going to some smaller "shady" used car dealers. There are a lot of gullible young military people around here that fall for some of these 25% interest dealers, so the business is always there. You can make a buck at it after you build up your client base.

Keep a photo catalog on each car until the shady dealer signs for it.......( outside front, rear, sides, and interior and trunk) They will try and screw you by saying you put all the nicks and scratches on his cars. Have a well written damage clause.

Listen to SHO-TYME, like me he has been around car haul for a while. You will find the proper insurance to haul cars is quite expensive, damage claims can add up fast, it is not unusual to have to buy a car if you do more than a few hundred dollars in damage. The U-Ship rates you quote are oddballs, POV's (personal owned vehicles) are usually .30 to .40 cents per mile, $1 per mile is usually for very short hauls or expedited runs. Also, make sure those rates are per car, sometimes brokers will list $1 per mile but that is for all three units as a group, not per car.

There is money in three car wedges, but you have to build up the customer base, running broker loads will not support you in the long run. Keep in mind, if car haul was easy everyone would be doing it. Good luck.
