tractor- box truck conversion

    Anyone converted a tractor to a expediter? If so, what were/ the cost involved? In addition, how much would it cost? Also, if one has a 13spd, would it be wise to convert to a 9spd? I see most expediters having autos? Is this a wise choice or is manual the way to go? Thanks for your input,

    I personally would keep a 13 or even 18 speed. It gives you that ability to keep the engine in its most efficient RPM range in a variety of driving situations.

    Well my knowledge of expeditors is fairly limited. However, I wouldn't convert the gearing. Im not sure how much of a benefit it would be. More gears are better for when you are pulling heavier loads and it gives you a better range of choices. However, switching over to a 9 speed...I wouldn't do it unless it night and day had a benefit over the 13. like...if it saved you 1mpg or something.

    If i was going into it...I'd just save the money and buy a expeditor truck that already is out there for sale. Lots of choices and you can use your specs to find the exact one you are looking for...instead of just working with what you got.

    I know this can be done, I've seen many old road tractors converted into straights. I haven't done it myself, but I can begin to think about some of the costs involved:

    -Frame Stretch (if required, I see some folks with 10' boxes on unstretched class 8 frames)
    -5th wheel removal (might be able to get some money back out of it)
    -plumbing work (electrical, & air lines will have to be moved around)
    -need to buy a suitable box
    -need to find someone to attach said box
    -addition of dolly legs to truck frame

    I'm sure there's things I missed but that should be a pretty good start for you. Some people say using a class 8 tractor is the only way to go, as it'll outlast a class 7 expediters working life by 100-150% (not sure if that numbers close at all, but it's what was said.) Pretty sure most of the transmissions are automatics due to most being O/O's and that clutch knee is going out. lol :p

    What are you thinking? Have you checked out the expedite biz lately? Seriously, unless you have your own accounts, you don't know what you are getting into. I know of several expediters that are ready to close their doors. Even the big guys are not hiring right now. I am not trying to be a jerk, but I know I am coming acrossed as one, but what is your plan?

    FedEx CC And Panther are cutting rates on cargo vans to keep them moving .(and some contractors are moving out because of it )
    FedEx CC recently announced cargo vans will be payed a flat $.85 a mile . I just read Panther is cutting their cargo vans to a discounted $.70 a mile . The owners of other classes of expedite trucks are concerned about what's coming next .
