Fleet Manager, Likes or Dislikes

What do you like the most or hate the most about your fleet manager? Is there anything cool/cruel that you will never forget? What do you want them to know that you think they overlook? Just curious, thanks!

Well I think the most important thing that a fleet manager can do is listen to his/her driver, and not coddle or be condescending to them and their problems.
It is the fleet managers job ( in my opinion) to look out for the drivers best interest and act as a "trustworthy" liaison between the driver and the rest of the operation.

I had a great dm for a while with one company. He understood the life, and the dilemma's drivers were faced with. After he got forced out, his replacement was ok but she tended to "give up" a little too easy in fighting for loads for the us.
I had a good rapport with her but she was overwhelmed by the machine.

I am interviewing for a fm job at a van expedited company and know little about the industry. I wanted to learn more about the job and the drivers before I sat down with them. If I do get the job, I thought this would be a great tool to learn what drivers like/dislike while they can remain anonymous. I would like to know all I can about the drivers so we can work together better if I was hired. I apologize for being naive on where to post, after my response, should I relocate to another forum? Thanks, guys and gals.

As an ex driver it's nice to see that some of the "shirts" in the office ( even though you don't have the job yet) would actually "care" enough to find out about us drivers! Kudos to you and good luck!

Thanks for the good luck wish. From an outsider with no first hand knowledge, I figure if we can have mutual respect for each other and try to work together life would be much better. I am sure the drivers can make the job miserable for a fm and a fm can be a jerk to the drivers which accomplishes nothing. Stay safe on the roads guys and gals and I look forward to your responses.

If you happen to be talking about something like CRST Van Expedite , that operates differently than most other expedite carriers . FedEx Custom Critical and Panther don't employ fleet managers . They contract fleet owners who in turn contract drivers . Carriers don't get involved with issues between fleet owners and drivers .
