I am in Murphy, NC and I am headed to Chicago. I can't run 64 over to Cleveland, TN because it is shutdown due to landslide. You can't run 441 through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. US 129 is a big no-no. I can't run through the gorge (I-40) because it is closed.

My only alternative is NC 294 to TN 68 north and that road looks pretty nasty. According to the Tdot website, this is the recommended detour for the rockslide on US 64, but I read on another site that it is a restricted route for trucks, however this was not a state website.

Does anyone know if TN route 68 is a legal route and how bad is the road. I just ran GA route 197 and US 76 to get here, so it can't be worse than that can it?

    Thanks, y'all.

Not sure if 68's restricted dont have my atlas in front of me, but on gps it looks like one heck of a windy road and probably not to much fun. How close can you get to Cleveland TN on US74 there? If you can get to US 411 i'd take that over 68. If not sounds like you almost have to take US 68. I hate being out on the back highways in the middle of the hills.

Esp at night. I looked at my atlas. It is not listed as restricted. I looked at that I am not sure, but seems to me like I been on it before. If memory serves me right and it was the one I was on it had some pretty wicked curves. Sorry I could not be more help. I can not for sure say I been on it, but believe I have been.

US 74 runs with 64 and is restricted.

They restricted all those roads down there when the slide closed the interstate, you will get a very hefty fine running that way. Even the truck routes are restricted right now. They have signs posted all over the place down there. Better stay on the big road like they tell you to do on the signs or it may cost you a lot more than your extra time for the detour.

The problem is that I am in Murphy and I can't get to either big road (US 64 is closed to Cleveland and I-40, the gorge, is closed). TN 68 isn't restricted in the atlas and, in fact, it is highlighted orange, and like I said, I ran Ga 197 and US 76 last night, and I have ran some pretty gnarly back roads a time or two. I am not skeered of them, but it is Tennessee and everybody knows that Tennessee hates trucks.

    http://www.aitaonline.com/Info/Road/Restricted%20Routes.html

According to them it is restricted for about 15 miles

Routes That Restrict Use By Motor Carriers

Route Location US 25/70 Newport to North Carolina state line US 25W I-40, Knoxville, to TN 113 TN 32 US 321 to North Carolina state line TN 57 US 45, Eastview, to Ramer TN 59 US 70/79 to I-40 to jct. TN 76 US 64 Parksville to Ducktown TN 68 Farner to Cokercreek TN 91 US 421 to Virginia state line US 127 TN 28 to Fairmount US 129 Chihowee to North Carolina state line US 321 Parrotsville to Salem US 441 jct. TN 73 & US 441 to North Carolina state line Natchez Trace Pkwy TN 100 to Alabama state line

They are on the watch for those attempting illegal detours because of I-40.I wouldn't risk it.Better off running 85-75-24-65 IMHO.

I ran the NC 249 to TN 68 to US411 to US129 into knoxville and it was all legal. In fact, the TN 68 IS the posted detour. It wasn't even that bad - no switchbacks, only a couple of slow curves. Of course, today's truckers don't know how to drive, so there were several areas where they have been running off the road and causing the asphalt to break. It's not restricted now, but it will be later. As usual sorry drivers screw it up for everyone else. Level of difficulty on the road was maybe a 2 on a scale of 1 to 5, not difficult for anyone who frequently takes back roads, but I gave it a 2, because if you drove it at night and never been on it before it might scare you. I am glad I went that way.
