Hey everybody, it,s good to be here, I got a couple of general questions about hauling produce and was wondering if I could get some help.

Here is what is going on, me and a good friend are getting back into truck driving, going team, we will be hauling produce out of california to New York NY, then load back out of NJ and head back to California. dedicated run. the person who owns the truck say's he will pay us 500 dollars guaranteed a week, plus 75 dollars a drop. I know the pay sounds real low, we thought so to, so here is what I am trying to do, I am trying to work up a worksheet showing what the trucks expendetures are per month, verses what the owners income is going to be after, to see if we can get a little more money out of him, here are my three questions.

    1) can somebody give me an average on what the line haul would be for produce out of California and being delierved to New York NY ?

    2) Can I also get an average on what the Line Haul would be coming out of NJ and say going to Los Angeles California

    3) The owner of the truck we are to drive will be using a broker service, does the broker take any amount of money off the top, or is the linehaul he is saying the correct transportation price.

Any help would be appreciated on this Thank You`

Produce pays pretty good. Remember, it's what the truck makes, not the owner. You say $500 a week, that's each driver, right? Brokered loads will pay less, depending on the broker and his honesty and report with the truck owner. A ball park amount of produce going Ca.-Ny. would be $5000 to the truck and less going from Jersey to Ca. These are not hard numbers, but will kind of give you an idea of truck revenue. You can do the math with regards to running expenses etc. And yes, $500 a week to each driver is way low pay.

At a round figure of 6000 miles round trip, and a team splitting .35/mi (which is on the low end for teams) you come up with $1050 per driver in wages. At $500/wk he's paying .175 per mile gross to the team. He'll be smiling all the way to the bank.

Don't walk away from that deal, RUN!!

$500.00 each for that trip was low wages in 1980. I'm being serious about that.

Thank You for the replys, Yes me and my Partner in crime are thinking the same thing, way low pay, this is why I am here asking this question, and thanks again for the reply, we are just interested in him being fair, all's I want is another 100 dollars each base pay that would be 600 dollars each or 1200 dollars to the team, plus 75 dollars for each drop, figure with a team you can get to NY and back to Calif in 7 day;s and make 2 deliverys that would be 750 dollars to each driver or 1500 dollars to the team, still a little low I think, but with the economy being bad still I will give him a break. As far a sme I am still going to run, I have been interested in getting back on the road for some time, as far as my partner, I am pretty sure I can talk him into it, he is just worried about our bottom line of 500 dollars base each, basically averages out to 250 each driver to get from Ca to Ny and back, thanks everybody

thanks stranger you don;t have to tell me, I know i have done the math, when I first started driving back in the late 80 the going rate was .21 cents per mile, and know I am being asked to go team averaging .33 cents per mile to the team which averages back out to 16.5 cents per driver. not good, again this is why I am here, working up a expense sheet for I can try and get us a little more money, at least 100 dollars each plus our drops wou;ld average us out at about 750 per driver

Are you going to be paid with a 1099, or is he taking out taxes. If a 1099, you will end up footing the payroll taxes he is supposed to pay, plus it is illegal for him to pay you this way according to the IRS.

Also, be 100% sure you have workers comp insurance he is paying for. If something happens and he does not have it, you could be ruined.

you are going to love this answer stranger, this guy says he is going to pay us under the table. ! and when i first met him and talked to him I had my questions, i asked him about the 1099 he said do not worry about it, you will not sdee one, when i asked him how he was going to get away with it espically here in california, he said what he does is write the amount up as a loss, you got me, how he gets away with it i do not know. Can you give me more information about it being illegal for him to pay us this way according to the IRS. I have been looking up average start up pay for teams, i come up with 0.35 cents to the mile to the team so far this being the lowest

This is Uncle Sams page that reports the weekly average rates for produce! This is something brokers don't want you to see or know about!

But that deal? RUN or get the money before you hit the 1st dock as it sounds BAD! Make sure the check clears or the cash is printed on both sides!

This is the governments site on produce rates for the preceeding week. Brokers do not want you to know about this site!
Now as for that "deal" you mentioned. Get the check befoe=re you hit the dock and make sure it clears. OR get the cash IN HAND but make sure it's printed on booth sides because if he's not willing to pay the east bound freight charge in advance on this kind of deal RUN!

for some reason there is a problem with TTR web site! It froze up and I reposted! Oh Well!
