OK, it's official. Merge late, don't "block"

    I will admit that for years and years, I would be one of the "blockers". Pissed me off to see those #### 4-wheelers rushing up to the front, not taking their turn. Then I began to notice that in those states that had signs saying "Use both lanes to the merge point", traffic DID move quicker. Started thinking about it, and it makes sense.

    Even old dogs can learn new tricks.

    If everyone held their lane right up to the merge point this would be true. However in the real world there will be a sign indicating which lane is closing several miles ahead of the merge point. Around 75% of the cars and trucks will get over early. The backup in the open lane will be longer and will move slower. Its still a good idea for a couple of trucks to hold back the 4 wheelers to the merge point. That effectively does what the study suggests.

    Traffic jams are created by one simple tap of the brake. The one behind brakes a fraction a second longer and so forth until the traffic is at a complete stop behind them.

    I seen it first hand from the air when I flew with a traffic reporter down near Ft lauderdale. There was a 15 mile back up with one little old lady up front. This was on I-95.

    We all seen both ways first hand. When everyone gets over early with no need for braking, everything goes smoother.

    These desk jockies with their stupid idea's need shot for telling the public different. They say that crap because they are one of the line butters themselves. Of course it seems quicker to him. He just butt in line.

    Blocking in the middle is no different than the front of the line fighting. Effective blocking is at the end of the line only.

    2, 4, 6, and 8 inch rumble strips placed evenly out to a mile before the merge point, with the highest being closest to the lane ending...

    Would work miracles, and end all the BS surrounding this issue.

    Merge....or rip your undercarriage out.
