I just carry Mace/Pepper Spray designed specifically for use against Grizzly Bears. Shoots a stream and a cloud up to 20 feet and will drop a bear to his knees. Ought to work real well on a human. And.... since it is a wildlife deterent, the legal issues are minimal. Just say that you use it to drive away rabid dogs from around your truck. Pepper spray designed for human use is pretty well regulated in a lot of areas, but not wildlife repellent, which, is a much stronger concoction. That is why I also use to carry 12 guage flare gun for protection. Perfectly legal in all 50 states and even NY and DC as it is an emergency signaling device. But a 12 guage flare coming at you is not something to sneeze at. Don't know his name, but I know of one individual in the Bronx who will reconsider ever jumping on the running board of a truck and try to break in. Definately had that deer in the headlight look when that flare came his way.

Ok from reading this thread it seams that a lot of people getting CCW mixed up. CCW was established to allow citizens to carry concealed weapons in public. In the past if you went down town or anywhere with a weapon you had to carry it cowboy style but criminals wasn't doing this and it gave them a advange over normal law bidding citizens. Law makers decided that allowing citizens to carry consealed weapons would lower crime rates. CCW has nothing to do with carring a weapon to another state or carring it at all. It allows you to conseal it. Any law bidding citizen can carry a firearm but you need a CCW to conseal it.
Now as far as transporting it Federal Law say Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

Mr. PlumCrazy-What you're saying about open carry being legal is true for your home state of NC, but it certainly is not for neighboring TN, and many others. Carrying a loaded handgun in TN, open or concealed, requires a handgun carry permit. TX does not allow open carry even with a permit, concealed only. The Federal law you quote is iffy at best on protection while transporting a handgun (unloaded and locked separately from the ammo) and most likely will not protect you from states like NY, especially if you were to stop to pick up or deliver. The law you quoted is 18USC§926A. The NRA-ILA has an excellent online guide for the interstate transportation of firearms based on this law, including which states do not honor this law for handguns.

All this to say, anyone who reads this needs to check out a more reliable source of info than a trucker's forum on the internet. Do not take my word for anything, I am not a lawyer, do your own research. This thread is almost three years old, and there are a couple of longer ones on here about the same issue, with more information, but none of it should be trusted if you don't verify it independently, being wrong or misinformed about this issue can make a felon out of you.

Josh said it best. Do your own research, don't listen to truckstop lawyers. Each State is different and you may be surprised what your allowed to do with concealed carry permits. State's don't recognize all concealed carry permits. It is very confusing if you use a blanket assumption. Some States' don't recognize any permitsexcept for their own. Good luck.

I don't believe so, but each time I deal with it, I have to look it up. Right now I'm not working and all the stuff is out in the car.
