Seeing a lot of newbies wanting to make a start. Thought this would be a good time for experienced drivers to chime in for their reasons to start or look elsewhere.

I say no for the simple reason that so many things have changed and in my opinion not for the better. I understand why a lot of people do. Factories closing. Jobs relocating, but this is not the same job I got into 30 years ago. The paydays are not what they used to be. There is a lot of wear and tear on the driver. The families and the health of the driver. Marriages/ family suffer and the divorce rate has always been high in this field. The stress is overwhelming and the headaches just seem to get worse.

People often treat you like scum. You are often lied to, by pretty much everyone you encounter. To many decisions are made for you. Pay is pretty low starting out and there are plenty to take your place just dieing to get their foot in the door or should I say your seat? Companies often treat you like they are doing you a big favor and can put the charm on while gouging you all the way. I always hear about "the freedom" or the dream of always wanting to do this. Or the infamous I love to drive. This job will take more of your life than you know. It will suck the life right out of you very slowly. There is a big price to pay. Are you willing to foot the bill? Are you willing to gamble the outcome of your family?

A lot has changed out here. I would look long and hard at other options before I rolled the dice on this gamble. That is just my opinion. I want other drivers to give their input, but remember I am not asking why you did this or enjoy this. I am asking would you tell someone who is considering this to do it or pursue something else. There was a time when what I thought then and what I think now. This is not the same thought pattern that I always had of this job. To give an example between deployments and or trucking I have missed a lot of my home life. My kid is soon to be going away for college. Sure I always provided well; for my family, but where was I when I did it? Not here in their lives. That is for sure.

Couldn't have said that better myself!:smt023

The only thing I would add is to the ones who think that trucking will let them see places they would normally never get to see...... It isn't much of a sight at 55-75mph and if you do have the chance to stop, you'll not enjoy it as much when your family is at home and you are there.

    Agree with the above 100%
    Voted NO....

The only reason i still drive is because its about the only thing i know to make a halfway decent living. Not like we are getting rich, thats for sure.

It takes away the years before you know it.
Missing deaths in the family, kids growing up,cheating wives....you name it.
Been through all of that and two back surgeries....

This is NOT the perfect job.....:biggrin_25510:

I think it is ok for a temporary thing to do but not long term and not as a career choice. The industry has slid downhill so far since even ten years ago I cannot imagine it improving. You can argue until you are blue in the face but as far as OTR goes you will be treated like a truck. Nobody gives a crap about you and your time is worth zero to nearly each and every person you come across. You arent even payed for your time or it would be a great job and career. Payed by the mile is absurd when it barely pays the bills in the end. Too many sacrifices are made in your every day life and the reward is not on par.
As soon as I get squared away and/or spring arrives I am outta here so fast. The biggest mistake I ever made was signing up for this crap a second time around. I was once happy.

    I also voted no,..

However,..If one is lucky enough to get into a good Union company with a good contract and get payed for all time spent working,...It isn't as bad as the otr world,....

I'd still tell a young wannabe too go back to school and find a career path that lets them have a family life and a future,....

I voted no for most of the same reasons already stated however I wouldn't say no for 100%.

I got into this business long before I had a family at home to provide for. By the time I met my wife this is all I really wanted to do or was good at. I tried to give it up but I couldn't make a good enough living doing other jobs where I was home everyday plus I always had the itch to be back on the road. LTL jobs have never been much in this area so that was not an option really. I went back on the road and have provided a good living for my family but I have also sacrificed providing them a good living for missing most of it. I still love to fire up the truck and take off I just wish there was a better balance between being gone and being home with my wife and kids. :biggrin_2557:
