Hey all I started working P/T for a guy in CT and we do LTL loads mostly in CT, NY, NJ, MA but I am having a little bit of a learning curve issue.
I have no problem finding my way about when I have an address to help me look on a map, And I use a GPS to keep track of when my turn are coming up but never for the directions themself.
I am a full time fire fighter who just drives part time to make the ends meet while trying to purchase my first house and start a family.
Anyways my issue is the airports (mainly JFK). Most of what I haul is all jet engines and parts/tooling for the manufacture and repair. So my airport runs are always on the schedule. How the heck to I find my way around when they just give me a location of Hangar #xx and nothing else. Is there a secret map or something or a trick.
I may be young but never to proud to ask for help so thanks in advance!

Not sure how JFK works but I use to deliver to Newark Airport twice a week. I had to enter at a specified gate number and go through all the fun security. I loved the security people, once you go to know them, it was a breeze. Once cleared by security, an escort veichle would guide me to the dock. Mind you, the dock for the foodservice was right next to some gates and you had to go out on the tarmac(sp). Follow ALL intructions that the airport personal tell you. Once deliver was made, followed escort back to gate and away I went. Max time:30-45 minutes(it was a dock stop, pull 2-3 pallets off, STC), depending on trucks in front of me and arrivals; like I said, right next to some gates.
Forgot to add: Hit or damage a plane or airport property, you would be banned for life at Newark. I had to spin the truck(48' trailer with a sleeper) around to back into the dock. If they had a plane at the last gate, your trailer was with 2-3 feet of the wings when you spun. We had the farings(sp) removed from the truck after the first trip. The first driver that had the run killed the farings.
And watch out for those baggage bugs. Those guys don't care. They will cut you off.Last edited: Jan 2, 2011

Well I survived!! It was not easy and had to ask for help but got her did!
I think it was more a mental thing seeing all of those signs and buildings and the driving around the planes on the tarmac. Pulling into the hanger next to a 747 having an engine replaced was pretty cool. Still having trouble finding maps with the cargo areas and building designations for each airlines cargo area. I started making a cheat sheet with that info though to help me in the future.
The company I am driving for is condor. -
I know a lot of airports have separate entrances from the main entrance for passengers. You may even enter from the perimeter street to access hangars etc.

finally got my hands on a map and now its even easier. just gotta take a minute to save a minute.

I used to send loads of deicing fluid to Phil, NWK, JFK, LaGuardia & more. They all had a specific location to report to.
The worst part was asking a driver to go to JFK or LaGuardia at 3PM on a weekday during a snowstorm! It was one of the hardest things I ever asked a driver to do...
