I don't know. Lets look at a pick up truck driver at 83 years of age but listen to the news story on the aged driving. If this keeps up then we will se a new change of the laws. http://news.yahoo.com/video/us-15749625/caught-on-tape-driving-the-wrong-way-24131329

At some point you should have to pass a driving test to keep your licence, but at what age? I have ridden with old people that scared the heck outta me, there is a time when what's happening outside that car is just going too fast for their mind to process. We see it every day, a car poking along on the freeway, and yep, it's a "senior citizen". Not me of course, I'm a young 66.

well at least it was a ford and not a chevy
squirrellsgnwild and bowtieboy Thank this. -
what was the driver doing in the trucks blind spot?
-
I don't think 77 is too old.Heck the truck driver has been at it for who knows how long.
He must me ok to pass a DOT physical every two years.
If the other driver rear ended the truck would it not have been his fault?
But as usual it is ALWAYS the big trucks fault......such BS! -
you have your Medical card..........age is mind over matter....................you don't mind.........it don't matter
Wargames Thanks this. -
Well, the AWG 76 year old driver that killed 10 people on the Will Rodgers Turnpike got sentenced to 30 days in jail. And never have a commercial license again. You read about it. Horrific. They say he didn't even hit his brakes. AWG coughed up $62m for that on, just for 8 of the 10. Special jailtime for seniors?
I don't advocate a particular cut off age as commercial pilots have. (Used to be 60, but what a waste!) I'm just saying that there has to be a more comprehensive test for CMV drivers after a certain age. The pride of many older people won't allow them to gracefully step out of the truck (or bus!) When my 72 year old mom (just a 4 wheeler) had a stroke, my cop brother had to take her license away from her. She didn't sell her car for 3 more years!
I'm no spring chicken. I would be glad to submit to such testing and accept the results as part of growing old. As long as I could prove to be able to do the job, why not at whatever age? But if my reflexes, peripheral vision, or reasoning ability were compromised, would YOU want me driving a big truck? -
that driver who's wheel "fell off" on the highway that bounced over the jersey barrier and killed a 4 wheeler was 70 something years old.
But personally I don't think the number matters, if you can drive you can drive!
One of the Safety managers for Watkins Shepard is 62 years old and can drive and back circles around most drivers (he and his brother used to do Trucker Rodeos and he's been driving since he was in his early teens) and his DAD still drives to!
