I keep hearing about the thousands of dollars that newbies are paying to truck driving schools to get their CDLs. plus a commitment of so many years to work for that company that got you the cdl.'

My question is this,, In the good ole days, you learned from the bottom up, there werent any truck driving schools.

Is it possible to get a group up and running of professional truckers that would be willing to use their trucks and give these people some on the road experience and eventually their cdls.?

Im thinking someonewhere on the lines of a group like OOIDA,, its has thousands of 0/0s in their membership, that own their own trucks and have their own authourity,

If the big mega companies can get these newbies to fork over thousands of dollars to get their cdls. why cant the OOIDA 0/0s et al, do that and give some of the money back to OOIDA for the funds they need to fight for truckers issues.

I think it could be done,, all the newbie needs is a learners permit and someone to sponsor them..

What a great advertising for OOIDA or any other group that could form this thing and get it up and running.

A newbie would contact someone like OOIDA who is offering this plan along with some OOIDA 0/0s that would join in the program with their trucks.,

Then the newbies would actually get a chance to learn from people that know the business first hand and have been doing it for many years,

They would learn to drive the right way.. OOIDA has many many members with long safe driving records and have seen it all and done it all over their many years of driving.

Imagine,,, Newbies being trained by the real pro truckers, not some 60 day wonder, who went through training by the big mega companies.

    What say YOU?

Sounds good in theory but do you think a OO would let a new driver with 0 experience drive his or her new truck?. When I got my CDL I didn't pay 1 dime for it. I used the WIA program with the state. The state paid for 12 weeks training as well as all DOT and licensing fees and even put me up in a motel near the school. The end result was a CDL with all endorsements in hand at no cost to me.

I would think the liability and insurance aspect of it might be a real problem.

Dude, O/O's do not want to be instructors. Newbies, in case you didn't know, tear up trannys and clutches. So why would an O/O want this done to his truck ? Plus, all the newbies that bail from the industry with-in 3 months would be discoureging.

I would take you up on it. The system seems a bit complicated to me with all the no hire zones. I guess I could also see why someone wouldn't want a newbie tearing up their truck though. Why are there so many drop outs?

I paid $500 to get mine...studied the book, rented a truck. I would not want to ask someone to pull their truck off the road, especially if I were to fail.

Dutchman, did you get any practice? Didn't you have to have a cdl to rent, and someone with a cdl to take you to the DMV?Just this morning I was thinking this might be a good alternative to a $5000 school or a year of indentured servitude.

I had no practice on the road, just tidbits here n there around the yard in transfer dumps when I washed them.

The company I rented from met me at the DMV at 10 AM with the truck & trailer. I road with the trucks owner around town, went to an open lot to practice skills, and found a shady spot to go over the pre trip. Did this until 2 PM. Went to the back to DMV for my 2:30 appt and did everything the same, except the the DMV instructor, while the trucks owner kicked back with a book in the shade til I got back

There are 3rd party testers like here in Oregon that are authorized by the DMV to give the cdl driving part of the test and to verify that they have passed and they go back to the dmv, with this certificate take the cdl written test , if they have not done it already and if they pass everything, they get their cdl.

When I was talking about 0/0s using their trucks to train newbies,, I should have clarified it by saying. 0/0s that train their sons, daughter, relatives or close friends rather than going to driving schools,,and the money they saved could go to the trucking company or the 0/0s to do what they wish to do with it.

It can be done. However you are going to be restricted to driving for the mom and pop outfits. Which personally I think is a good thing. It's really not the mega-carriers that make this rule it is their insurance. Of course it all boils down to the "money" aspect of it. Insurance companies scratch the backs of trucking schools, trucking companies scratch the backs of trucking schools, trucking schools scratch the backs of the students, from the inside!:pottytrain2:
