Well Strider a good find and all the info is right there. Just go to this site and click on "Regulations" the State and boom all your info.

Louisiana requires a permit and tells you where to get it. Don't look like Texas does but you may call them and see.

If you are going to get into the Pilot Car business I hope you do it right and with the right equipment, pilot cars need to be seen and people need to see the flashing beacon lights. When I did heavy haul I had house wives show up in the family mini van with one little beacon light and a real weak radio and then needed to stop every fifty miles. I even had one guy that didn't have a clue on what he was doing and had one of those little beacon lights that plugged into the cigarette lighter and home made oversize load signs that weren't even legal driving a little bitty compact car. He had lost his desk job and a friend told him he could do this with little start up and make some money. I wished all states required a certification and a one day schooling like Oklahoma does. I have had some real good escort drivers and the best ones were women but their are some bad ones out their.

    Strider Thanks this.

I have fired a few even the lady that called me a #######. When you are dealing with high dollar loads you need some good people with you and I would sit and wait on another one. I gave up on Comdata escort service after the cross dresser and the guy that pissed his pants driving down the road because I would not stop, we just stopped thirty miles back and I was fifteen wide on a two lane.

There will be an instructor here in Bridgeport, Texas....probably next week (hopefully Sunday or Monday) to give a class to several of us around here. If you want more info, contact me by e-mail.

I moved here from Orange Texas 15 years ago. I kinda miss the Orange area myself.

Well, most places will tell you that they don't need anyone. What you 'really' need is to 'know' someone in the Escort/Pilot Car business (or the actual driver of the oversize load), and they can get you in the loop with the right people. I know someone that has been doing this for 15 years, and he told me this. He is getting me in the loop, and all the work I can handle :biggrin_25525:.

I once suggested to my wife if she wanted to change careers, she should work for an oversized escort service. When I finally regained conciousness, I explained I meant for oversized trucks.

iirc, getting certified in ok will pretty much cover all but a few states ie utah, new york, etc and i think to get cetified in kansas she will just have to take a defensive driver course once certified in ok. i was a pilot car driver for 2 years about 2 years ago

I also have to admit, the title threw me too. :biggrin_2559:

As already suggested, she needs to try to talk to some "insiders" and find out what she needs to do. Maybe go to a local truckstop and just wait for an opportunity to talk to someone that's already doing the job.

She might try contacting the TX state police motor carrier office. They should be the regulatory agency that would be responsible for pilot car services, and could give her some info about what it would take to do it on her own.

    Here's a website that I found:
