It's a little like keeping more than 8 days logs in your possession. You could get pulled over, the COP looks at your book, including the last 25 or so days, and finds something askew from 3 weeks ago, BAMM, you're busted.

    Lonesome Thanks this.

On this subject I often say "If I get in trouble it will probably be for my records being too good or too long". That being said, I would never provide more records than I had to and would never let them know how many years I had unless I new I had an ACE that would buy me something.

tell you what..we get a lot of people here on this site with a criminal past...right..??

well suppose they keep the logbooks for a few years.

then someone accuses them of some crime, figuring that would be easy enough to nail an ex-con, right..??

by keeping the logbooks, may very well "clear" that person....in any such event..!!

Exactly! Our company used to keep old logbooks for YEARS! Finally, someone experienced in auditing told them, "if you have them they will want to see them. They can't be looked at if they're not there".
I think the requirement used to be 30 days, I believe it's 7 days now. Either way, when an old one gets 30 days old, it gets tossed. Why take a chance for "nostalgia", or the "chance" that you'll be audited?

The employer has to keep them for 6 months as per DOT Regulations.
