How many of you experienced guys out there would be annoyed by a rookie wanting to break into the business coming up and asking for a few minutes of your time at a truck stop to pick your brain about the industry? I know when your eating or fueling the last thing you want is to be interrupted or bothered... But there would be no better way to find out the truth, because we have established recruiters lie, than to ask those out there doing the job...Any suggestions on how to approach this?

Just walk up to them and ask, or offer to buy them a coffee... All they can say is no. What are you out?
-
Its cool to come up and ask bro the only thing is you need to observe and pick the right person alot of guys my self included are in a hurry sometimes and time is money. Head to the lounge in your local T Stop and youll find drivers chillin ask those guys.

You can usually tell the ones in a hurry... fuel, grab some grub and go. I'd approach a driver that's setting down eating a meal in the restaurant. I'm seeing more guys walk for exercise, around the parking area. They'd be a good one to approach too.

Your doing it right now. Drivers that are willing to answer questions usually volunteer their advice and opinions on trucking forums such as this 1. Ask any question you like and you will have hundreds and possibly thousands of other drivers from all segments of the industry reading your questions and in some cases answering them.
I read several threads/questions every time I log onto this forum. The only time I will respond is if I have an answer or different perspective than what has already been offered by other members. In some cases they are dissenting opinions and that can create some interesting discussions.
Just remember the answers you do get are someone elses opinion from their perspective and are filtered through their life experience.BigJohn54, puncher, Fratsit and 1 other person Thank this. -
I have finished Diesel truck Driving Training School but did not pass the driving test. All I need is practice with backing and angle backing, should I continue in my quest to be a driver? It is costing me a lot of money to take more driving tests. If I could sign up with a company to get more training, do you think that would work? Is there a company that would take me with a CDL permit?

stay away from the company sponsored programs.
do you really want to be contracted slave labor for a year?
take care of your own business up front and your options in hiring will be greater.
otherwise, you'll be at the mercy of whoever will have you for a year and it won't be fun or productive.....for anyone except the companytlenyard Thanks this. -
I always enjoy converstions with good people wherever I'm at (no bums, creeps, or know it all's) and always glad to give my advice or oppinion, but you won't find me in a truckers lounge.

Is there a company you're interested in? Does that company have a terminal, dropyard, repair facility in your area? Take a ride over there, you'd likely find someone over there to ask questions of. I wouldn't go up to someone who's obviously having a hard day of it, or someone trying to drop/hook a trailer. But most places you can find a driver just sitting around for whatever reason. Be careful though, people not in this job tend to be idiot magnets, through no fault of their own, no telling what you might hear, or don't want to hear!
