The exhaust temp light is all i ever get too. Same thing,it comes on after running hard and then coming to a stop. Then if you look in the mirror it will be smoking when you shift through the upper gears.8th through 10th mine will blow huge clouds of white smoke.

Diesel exhaust fluid, (DEF) has nothing to do with the particulate filter, although engines that utilize it to reduce nitrogen oxides(NOX), tend to produce less soot that the particulate filter does trap.
The white smoking is from fuel injected into the filter, it needs to ignite to not be whitish in appearance, and it doesn't always ignite. I seldom see a regen while driving, but once in awhile, I catch that dense cloud rolling back down over the trailer, it soon changes to a clear, but very hot plume that no longer falls back over the trailer, the DPF in my truck seldom puts out much smoke when a regen is being done.
I can smell other trucks trying to do an automatic regen and not accomplishing it, I saw a PA trooper pulling one over with underslung exhaust, and have heard drivers think or have someone tell them their brakes are on fire, but the smell of under burned fuel is lots different than the smell of burning brake material.
I don't have an exhaust temp warning light in my truck just a light to indicate need for a regen and another for when a shot of fuel is being injected into the filter. It seems to require a parked regen more often in stop and go driving on clogged expressways. -

I've never seen a rolling regen white burn off, and I'm running hills daily. I'm not in a day cab and usually only stop twice per day. After reading a few other issues in different posts about pro star issues, I'm begging my fm to get me to a shop. Slow isn't the problem, its probably numerous other things. 340,000 miles, crank case filter probably never been changed, along with dpf injector, manifold pressure/temp sensor most likely is carbon clogged...the list goes on...oi vey...
And before I forget, thanks Injun, heavyd, tazz, and everyone else who's posted helpful info! -
Might be time to have the DPF pulled and cleaned as well. Most likely, it's never been done.
sweetcakes Thanks this. -
Crankcase filter every 100k....I think that is what i read.( or Injun told me )
Mine was having issues with not taching up in every gear, some gears would fall on their face and others would wind up....strange.
The dealer did the forced regen with the computer plugged in and it solved the problem for about 6 months and now is coming back.
I get in a hard pull and let it lug down some it will spit and jerk...very strange.
The shop can't figure that one out either... -
As of today,my truck is in the shop again{for about the 8th time} for regen problems,It's an 09 Columbia with 250,000 miles on the MBE 4000 engine,I never idle, and drive for hours at a time at highway speeds. I can tell when it starts to happen, the check engine light comes on,a few hours later, the solid regen light comes on,then when it starts to flash,it's time to regen.Ya hit the rocker and it goes on high idle for 20-40 minutes,When it comes off of high idle,it's suppose to be clean, but never is.After awhile the truck will just shut down because the filter is so fouled up.
The dealership has replaced EGR's ,filters, and other parts, but the fix sees to be only temporary .We're hoping to replace both our tractors, but wonder if the new Diesel smoke fluid system is any better.
This is the only real problem we've had with this truck,It's a great truck but this has been ridiculous. -

2009 Freightliner in perfect condition !!!! make offer. -
Got my truck back yesterday from the Freightliner dealership,it was the throttle body but they said that the problem mimicked a regen fault.
Talked to the mechanics who told me that Freightliner no longer puts Mrecedes engines in their trucks and that Columbias are now Business Class. -
We had this problem with our Med. Duty truck. Every 400 Km the driver would have to stop for 20 minutesw and do a burn. They tried everything, and finally got a big wig mechanic to take a look at it. All he did was look at the driver and tell him to stop speeding.
The system needs diesel to do the burn automatically. So if you've got you foot to the floor there's no diesel left to burn, and it makes you stop to do it.
