Im a local driver at a large LTL company. We are very slow right now and I am basically laid off, but not technically laid off, just not working.
I took a side gig for a truck auction picking up semi tractors...A bunch of drivers pile into a van, they drive us somewhere, and we all get in the tractors and bobtail home.
Only done it 1 day so far....There were 6 drivers in the van total. We were talking and I told them where I worked and they were all whining because they couldnt find decent local gigs (this is basically a cash only, paid 1099 job...No benefits)
Well let me tell you....I was the only person in that van under 300 lbs. Most of the guys smelled awful. The supertrucker in front of me was about 350, I swear the dude pulled out a new sandwich every day....I must say though, his rebel flag hat definitely complimented the grease stains on his sweatshirt....
The guy next to him was even bigger, much dumber, and had atleast 4 teeth missing. He was definitely a looker. I bet those overalls and cowboy boots he had on drive the ladies nuts. This guy was almost in tears when he found out we were going to pick up Internationals, and he actually got out of the van before we left and went home because of it.
The rest of them were about the same. Just plain, dirty, greasy, smelly trash. These guys are home every night and still cant show up to work looking halfway decent, and smelling halfway decent.
So if you want a local job, or a good job, take a shower! Cut your hair, shave, dont wear your rags to work.
Im not saying wear a suit. Blue jeans, steel toe boots and even just a T shirt are fine, as long as its all clean.
PS: That van smelled so bad that I wont be going back. It was just shameful, especially considering that these guys are all home every night and have no reason to not shower.
