I was reading this somewhere, (may have been in a thread on here?) . It was saying that pop, such as coke or pepsi, helps to get a grimy windshield clean. I have never heard this before, has anyone tried it? Results? I am curious to know :biggrin_2556:

The acids will dissolve oily road grime and bugs. Then the pop is washed off easily with water, leaving a nice clean windshield, still have to scrub though. It works but not worth the hassle, theres easier faster ways. :)

Wait, no dont put that in your washer reservoir, it will make a heck of a mess, sticky sugar all over your windshield, nope, not a good idea at all. lol

Not to mention what the acid might do to the rubber seals in the pump.

Thanks for the replies. I definately wont put it in my resevoir !! I was curious to know how it worked as i remember having a hose spring a leak in the washer system last winter and i lost the last of my washer fluid until i could get to the next truck stop. I pulled over and tried cleaning the sand/salt grime with bottled water and snow and it wasnt working too well. The pop thing is another small but possibly very usefull lesson learnt.

Keep a spray bottle of concentrated methylene glycol or might be ethylene glycol (super concentrated windshield washer fluid available as a concentrate) or some 409 handy for tough jobs. But cleaning once a day will go a long way to reduce oily build up.

My formula for windshield washers is from spring to winter I forget wasting money with the blue stuff. I doubt seriously that global warming will cause any temps below 75 during the summer so I don't waste the -20 crap! Besides the blue stuff IN the washer fluid builds up in the nozzle holes stopping them up which has you standing on the steers with a pin cleaning the crapola out of the nozzles!

I fill the washer reservoir with 1/2 cup of Mr Clean or something compatible. 2 DROPS of dawn dish washing detergent. (1 small bottle should last you more than a year unless you use it to bathe with over bar soap. Yes it makes a great wash soap as it kills diesel odors on your body) Dawn cuts oil and grease very well over that non cleaning blue stuff! I do use the blue stuff in the winter but I still add the Mr. Clean and the Dawn. Be advised that there will be a slight residue where the wipers do not wipe IF you use too much Mr Clean and the Dawn!

I also fill an old 409 or Windex spray bottle with the same solution for pre treating the windshield so it will soften the bugs for cleaning and it makes good cleaner for the side windows and mirrors. Just rinse well when done with the brush or squeegee! For winter I fill the spray bottle with that blue stuff, a oz or 2 of Mr. Clean and 1/2 drop of Dawn. It also cleaned the wiper blades which is where most of the streaking comes from and many drivers overlook when fueling! Spray a little on a paper towel and also on the blades and scrub the blades down good then do the windshield and then rinse well. Those wipers will last longer when cleaned regularly which in my book was every time I stopped to fill up, my routine took me around all the glass and cleaned it while doing all the other stuff of checking levels and pressures! Being able to see is one of the most important things you can do!

Mow for that Coke! Guess what Coke uses at their plants to clean the engines? Yep their own syrup!

Coke does make a great cleaner, especially on the batteries. The acid will pretty much take care of any buildup on the battery posts or if a battery starts to over heat and leak. It will do a number on battery acid! Not to mention the windows if they are oily or greasy. Just be sure to wash it off as it will draw bugs and bees when you stop with it still on the truck!

I have used Coke myself and it does work.
I also have found the orange or green bug washer fluid does very well.
Prestone makes the green and Rain-X makes the orange.
The green seems to do the best at melting bugs.

The cheap blue stuff is useless when i run Florida...
