He have a 96 Pete and its still a pretty solid truck but heres the issue, it smokes ( white/gray) and it looks like oil in the coolant, we were told turbo but it seems like a head gasket to me. The truck has 900k on it and starts right up and dont miss a lick. It also has a 63in mid roof sleeper can and if so how hard would it be to put a 70 stand up on it?
96 Pete 3406 questions?

yep, if oil in the coolant i say head gasket to, if that's the case you may want to adjust those valve's to sense your in there, get an water and oil sample lab tested that should tell the story, now who will do the repair is the question now, you may want to ask this in the Garage section of this forum, where's MR HANEY AT

You need to repost this question in the garage section here....

As others have said this should be moved to the garage section, but I will tell you it's probably a liner either cracked or moved in the block. At 900,000 I would plan on a overhaul regardless. I guess that you will have a shop do it, and they will know to check the deck (it may need to be cut), if you plan to do it yourself let us know for more info. As for the sleeper, it shouldn't be a big problem except maybe changing sleeper brackets at the rear of the sleeper.

Ya we will probably take it to a shop was just trying to get some ideas. To tell you the truth I dont know how to move it to the garage section. I also figured its time to rebuild so Im thinking we should spend the money and rebuild. What else should we change while we got it down? ( injectors, bull gear etc...)
puncher Thanks this. -
You have still not said which 3406 you have, but the shop doing the work will probably know what to change during the overhaul but here are a few things to consider on an in-frame, air compressor, oil pump, oil cooler, turbo, injectors or nozzles depending on engine, reman head or have yours checked and re-done(valves & guides), air filters, if mechanical also check the timing advance and probably rebuild. If doing an out of frame check all front gears and replace bushings(bearings), and replace front and rear main seals, cam bearings. But remember if you've changed any of the things above recently, you could let those things go. I may have forgotten a few things but this an idea of what to look for and expect.

Im not by the truck and someone else looked at it and said that it only had 3406 on the head and nothing else, its 475hp if that helps. I tell you the truck fires up on first try misses just for a few sec's, smokes but runs like a bad out of hell and will idle all day with no problems.
