Odd title huh? Anyway, are any of you guys still crossing this country with sleepers in the 48-51 inch range? I recall growing up in Florida and seeing Lester Coggins guys running those FLD flat top 48 inch sleepers, as I grew up and transitioned into driving I realized how tough it must have been to be gone weeks at a time in nothing more than a coughin, no room for tv's, fridges, the comforts of home?

Well here it is 2011, almost 2012 and I still see guys from far off places of this country keeping those old trucks running up and down the road, whenever they pass me, or I pass them, I always think to myself "that guy must have some good stories". To me these guys are out there for the love of trucking and the lifestyle and not so much getting to the truck stop early and popping in their favorite dvd.

Hat's off to those of you keeping that tradition alive, and believe me I know there's still plenty of hardcore truckers running around these days with the finer things in life, like a condo sleeper with all the bells and whistles, so no ill words to you guys at all.

For as small as those petes are, they still look kind of roomy inside. I would bet there's still a handful of drivers that would prefer something like that. I like the styling, but if I had to run like you, or others on here I would have to have room to move around.

I have a 72" Areocab sleeper and it's just right....However if I found a good deal on a 86"Studio sleeper in perfect condition I'd probably go for it.

I ran those small sleepers when we had no choice but to run them....I would never want to run one again.

roomy:biggrin_2551: i dont think so lol. I agree i love the way they look on a pete, but i couldnt live in one. If i ran local with an occansional over night that would be one thing, but even running mon-fri with weekends off dictates a midroof as far as im concerned.

I like to stand up from time to time lol

Nah....It doesn't weigh that much more....and besides usually the heavier the freight the lower the rate.

BlackW, I've seen photos of what you used to drive, I'm sure you were more than happy to walk away from those things and never look back. Your kind of stories are the type I would like to hear, how things were back then. I've been at it since 03' and know that I'll never be able to experience what it used to be like, hell I don't even have family who drove so I have nothing to relate to as far as how it was in the "old school". If you ever feel like sharing, go right ahead.

You don't ever seem to get to the east coast so I'm sure we'll never run in to one another, but Sonny "oldnewbie" spoke well of you when I met him a year or so ago.

I used to get to the east coast a lot, Then the tolls went up!

Now I negotiate a rate and then after I negotiate the rate I tell them that they need to add $200 to offset the tolls.

Obviously they don't like that, so I don't go up there too much right now. I'm one of the few that really likes running the northeast but I won't take that much money out of my pocket to do so.

So maybe one of these days you'll see me.
