Driving an underpowered unit on secondary roads in places like deepest darkest W.V. it becomes a necessity to skip going up hill. Why? Because by the time you get to the next lower gear; you have slowed beyond the speed appropriate for that gear. How? Say for instance you would normally downshift @ 1600. Lug it down to 1500 then skip a gear down. That simple.

Penske safety guy told me years ago that skip shifting saves fuel, because you can get into higher gears quickly. FWIW.....

Tell me about it........Just drive the #### truck. Shift it when it needs to be shifted and get down the road!

And if you are still learning how to shift, posting about it on the internet wont get you any closer to learning. Just get in and grind em til you find em and you will figure it out. Weve all been there done that and stripped some gears to prove it.

Pro: Can get to a higher speed quicker on acceleration. (requires a down grade or a light load/bob tail), Can get to the apropriate gear/RPM for the grade you are pulling.
Con: Higher risk of a poor/missed shift, Even damage if done improperly.

I skip shift when im driving, I use a 10 speed, If I have no trailer I start in 4th then from 4th to 7th then, 8th, 9th, and 10th, if Im empty with a trailer then I start in 3rd and go to 4th, 7th,8th,9th, and 10th, if im loaded I start in 1st then 2nd,3rd,4th, 6th,7th,8th,9th, and 10th I like to skip 5th and use 6th because I can use the high range as a hp boost, but I shift at 2000 rpm instead of modern truckers who shift at 1500 rpms, I use hp instead of torque

another hint, when shifting in low range with a load, ram it into gear as quick as you can, the gears don't grind that way, and another hint don't use the clutch to shift unless downshifting on a hill

Its called skipping gears. Don't none of you new guys try it until you got a good amount of time in and can propperly drive.

The last thing I need is some rookie going done hill behind me getting lost in his gears.

Look try floating your gears first, and once you become more familiar with driving and shifting then try it.

Really you should only up shift and down shift one gear at a time until you really learn how to drive. I've seen so many of these inovative drivers trying to do #### they shouldn't and just put others in danger.
