first of all a cummins is more expensive to maintain than a detroit is. if u want fuel economy look into the detroit or MAYBE the paccar mx (haven't seen alot of data or heard enough about those engines on how economical they are). a w9 for looks yes, fuel economy a big NO. 660 isn't bad. if ur a die hard kw fan the 660 may be ur best bet.

a friend of mine owns a 2012 cascadia with a 515 detroit with an 13 spd automatic & is getting 7.9 - 8.3 pulling a reefer with it.

another friend has a 386 pete with the paccar mx engine & 10 spd manual pulling a step deck & getting in the low to mid 6's, but has been in the shop several times.

my brother just bought a W9 with a 550 cummins, getting high 5's to low 6's with full air shield on sleeper, pulling hopper bottom, reefer, livestock, & rgn; has almost 400k on it & been in the shop 5 times for fuel cam flattening, valves, etc.

i'd put my money on the detroit. fitzgerald gliders are cheaper & don't have to worry about egr, dpf, etc. alot cheaper also & can get them spec'd like u want it.

    just my 2 pennies

I see a lot off people praising the "glider" way off buying a new truck.

I will not claim to know what will happen in the future but it is allready shure you cannot use it to run California in the future(which is the 9° biggest economy worldwide,so you cannot just say:"i will no longer go there")
I read somethings about ports in the East off the USA looking to adopt similiar rules.

As O/O's ,our biggest strenght is to work more flexible and efficient then the major fleets.
This usually involves taking care off our trucks and running then longer.

Given that longer period off use and the possible change in rules as to using older engines, can you afford to lose part off your potentiel market?

I'm not saying that gliders are bad or good.

I'm just pointing out the risk with them.

I could care less if California was the largest economy in the world
I can say and do say I WILL NOT RUN THERE. That's the nice thing about being a O/O I choose where I want to run

Ya i'm a pretty big kw die hard the truck i learned on and got my license with was a t600 so i want the first truck i buy to be a kw as they have a special place in my heart lol...not really good business but i'v got other reasons looks comfort resale.

This is gonna be a lease truck. i spec it the boss buys it and i get the payments. Now because of that i can't do a glider i already asked him if that was an option and was told no.

Getting big 550 power in the truck is really a guilty pleasure than anything lol iv driven to many gutless company trucks, its gonna be my truck i want the power there for when i need it,the other reason is once it''s paid off i want to turn it into a show truck with some buts under the hood.

Because i want a kw a detroit is outta the question im not a big fan of them anyway. and reference being smart and going with the mx motor i'll pass i currently drive a truck with one while the power isn't bad for a little motor its everthing else i don't like about it the way it shifts the way it sounds the loud annoying rattly air compressor setup they have on it, and the last engine update they did to play with turbo spool up speed to stop them from blowing oil up to the air filters made it feel lazy almost like a detroit though not as bad.

i'm trying to fulfill my guilty pleasures of having a good looking bad ### truck, as well as te practical side of me wanting to do this right and make some money. right now i'm leaning toward one of these only with 72in and aerodyne sleeper to get the best of both worlds..well i hope anyway lol

First the w 900 is still made with the isx cause I bought one. Dog had to wheel me out and put me back in it. Now ill tell u the truth yes I dont run it slow so my fuel mpg is not the best when im flat footing it it will drop.down to 4.5 set on cruise with #40,000 in the reefer at 75 mph im getting 5.4 when I cruise call it will get up there at 6mpg. It all depends how u drive.it and how much your hauling behind u. When I have hill out here in the west forget it the mpg is horrible. I thought about the Volvo 880 but went back to kw. Its just a matter of what a driver wants. I always liked the hoods but I will admit even though I had the big sleepr Volvo and Kw the dang 770 I had in 2003 was the best riding truck ive been in and mpg was great and it had a Detroit before they switched. I wanted to retire but the road called me on my , cell and told me to come. out and drive. So here I am in Houston headed to Dallas then back home to sin city. Still have the.other 2 kws one for my race trailer and the.other for looks..lol

Oh and the other reason I bought a new truck was because of the C.A.R.B rules in California. I had to do the same with a Gen 2 reefer trailer. I run produce out of Cali alot so it was an option that I couldnt avoid. Im not sure on this this regenerate system as I haven't had to do it yet and whats really weird is I dont see any soot on my stacks lol.

I'm running a '12 T660 with the MX paccar motor, getting 6.8 avg. for the 160,000 miles now. It's a bit of a dog on hills and been in the shop once for a DEF sensor. Yes, it's a company truck and hauls heavy 90 percent of the time. I'm looking into buying it since it has run pretty clean over the past 13 months. As for the w900, if you look at the re-sale value, who wouldn't want one. You run one for three years and still get 75 percent back, it's amazing when you look at that. They are almost the same as the new 660 weight wise also, so if you looking to get a big hood, why not?

Me, I'm just another KW guy! And I like it that way.

Oh yea, stay clear of the '11 paccar, total basket-case, IMO.

    i havce a 05 w9 isx 450 13 sp.

my mileage don't matter if i'm in utah or california

and right now. i'm only hauling 10k on the flat and this tank of fuel must be bad or something. cuz i'm not even gonna hit the 1000 mile mark where as i usually get at least 1150. can't wait to get the turbo and muffler replace. and hopefully get back to the 1300 mile range

as for emissions. california sets the standards where the rest of the country soon follows.

pretty soon even gliders with older engines won't do you any good. probably with in the next 5 years we'll all have to have 07 or newer engines.

    10 years max
