Watched a truck nearly roll over this morning.
I watched a semi almost roll over today for taking a roundabout way too fast.
I was in Emporia KS, leaving the Flying J and heading to the interstate. As you may/may not know, you have to go around a roundabout on the way over to the on-ramp. I saw a truck coming up along the hammer lane. I had the room so I went ahead and turned into the right lane and was going slow because it was raining and I knew that roundabout was coming up. The truck in the hammer lane flew past me and my only thought was "I hope he knows there's a roundabout coming up."
I watched the whole thing unfold. I think the speed limit around the roundabout is 30. I swear the other truck must have been going about 45. He started going around and I could just tell if he didn't hit the brakes any time soon he was going to roll it. About a third of the way around he hit the brakes and pulled it hard right but by then he was going too fast. He took out a metal post with a reflector on it that are around the outside of the roundabout and came to a sliding stop in the grassy area to the right of the roundabout and US-50.
Naturally my first instinct during all of this was to slow the heck down. When I saw the truck leave the road I immediately put my flashers on and looked for an area big enough to pull over and see if I could be of any help. Luckily it was about 2-3am. Unfortunatly it was also raining pretty good. Luckily the driver was okay, but really shaken up. His truck was okay and his load of live pigs was okay. He was trying to call his boss when I pulled up. You could tell he was really rattled by this and honestly, I can't blame him. He said he hydroplaned but I'm not going to judge the guy, I just wanted to make sure he was okay and wasn't in need of medical attention.
Since he was okay, the truck was okay and the trailer was okay, I told him I was going to keep heading down the road.
That was a close one!
Be careful out there, especially at night when it's raining. And watch those roundabouts on US-50 in Kansas. I know there's another one west of Emporia out in the middle of nowhere.

something that can ruin your day rather quickly if you don't treat them with respect.

A cloverleaf highway intersection? Think they call 'em roundabouts in Europe and Australia.

Nope. Nothing like a cloverleaf. Follow the link above.

Livestock haulers drive a little fast anyway so not too surprising. Anyways I hate roundabouts.
