Hey,That makes them feel like a "Big" truck driver....lol!
I have had guys do that to me many times,I get out of the no fly zone and walk back by them cruising 80 and just laugh..
78 to 82 is my trucks sweet spot for cruising on open highway when traffic allows.

Actually what started the governed speed thing again, about 10 yrs ago, was the insurance companies. they gave them a discount for reducing the trucks speed, thereby reducing the amount of damage to the vehicles.
the companies told the drivers it was for fuel mileage to keep the peace. yes it help the mpg, but not that much and also reduced the productivity of the truck by reducing the freight hauled per month.

My daughter used to work in the ins. industry and told me about it , when she heard me hollaring about it.lol

my cruise is usually set about 73,no gov.

I go to NYC from PA all the time on 78. There are 3 big hills along the way (Allentown/Bethlehem, Heidleburg, and the one past the T/A in NJ)

It sure is nice to get a good head of steam going at the bottom of those long pulls.

When I first started with this company,I drove a mechanical Int'l POS, it might do 80 downhill with a tailwind and a push. Then I moved into a '94 Mack CH, 380HP Mack MP7 10 spd. It wasn't goverened, the boss thought it was. They bought it used, they told the dealer to gov. it at 77 mph, apparently the dealer forgot, the guy who drove it before me had it up to 90. The last number on the speedo was 90, I had the needle pinned and still felt like it had some more. My current truck will do 100 easily, it's been set back to 78 on the peddal and 75 on cruise. But when we first got it, someone forgot the gov. setting and left it untouched. According to the portable speed gun just before a construction zone, I hit 99 (that's as fast as the sign would read) then let off. Two days some darn fool (AKA my boss) cut it's nuts off @ 65 mph (the insurance man caught up to me for my 3 tickets in 2 years). Was forced to drive 65 for 18 mos.

The guys that pull for nascar are the drivers that have the real fast trucks. they must pay each state extra money to drive the way they do. Seen them come by a number of times back in the late 90s. Always going flat out. I was locked in at 67 mph and the nascar trucks must have been doing about 85 to 95 through Texas one year. The speed limit was 60 mph during that day in Texas back then. When you have the money and people waiting to put you on TV, I guess you can drive as fast as you like. Don't know if they still drive like that to day with all the new laws. ?? I would like to know.
These guys have to get from one track to another in a certain amount of time. The state troopers did not stop any of them, they just looked on as speeding trucks went by. How do they get away with that ?? Anyway it was cool to see those rigs.

iv never drove a nutted truck every truck iv ever drove was wide open. although i normally follow the speed limits and at times even below the speed limits i run a lot of 2 lane i don't know how you could ever safely pass a slow car or truck on a 2 lane in a nutted truck. get stuck behind someone doing 50-55 in a 65mph zone and you would just be stuck there because of the time and distance it would take to pass with a max speed set in the low to mid 60's

I've "run-out" a down hill once or twice.

Exceeded the speedo in WV once with a heavy load in a 9400.
You wouldn't believe how quiet it got in that flying brick at that speed.

Won't be doing that ever again.
