    What's with these state troopers?

When I get pulled over they would walk up to my truck and pull on the door handle to open my door. Couldn't open it cause I keep my doors locked. He told me to open the door and I said no I don't want you looking in my truck. Still refusing to open the door I simply gave him my documents cdl, med card, log book etc. After he did his little inspection or whatever, he tells me I'm logging wrong. What makes them log book experts? I never got any log book violations the way I was logging and my company didnt have a problem with it. Some of them don't really know what their looking at. There was a time dot officers was checking log books at a weigh station. When asked for mine I'm thinking I'm in trouble because I was completely out of hours and driving illegally. Instead of putting me out of service he just thumbed through it, gave it back to me and said have a nice day. Obviously he didn't know what he was looking at. I don't give a (fill in the blank) what they are taught at the academy nobody that does not drive a truck for a living and have no experience in trucking will tell me how to log.

you were very lucky because YES the dot know exactly what they are viewing, are highly trained to recognize any irregularity on logs, and apparently was in a giving frame of mind that time.

i keep my doors locked as well and enjoy the look on their faces as they attempt to snatch one open;it happens often as the dot stands outside the scalehouse watching drivers creep by. i generally keep easing on as my window is rolled down.if they do not tell me to stop,i keep going.go figure-

You might want to check, but he is allowed in the front part of the truck, the business end.

I'm glad I've only been in contact with professional acting DOT. I did get pulled into an inspection a couple months ago by the North Dakota State Patrol, and the guy that did the inspection was nice enough.

The only thing that rubbed me wrong was, at the end of the inspection, he said, "I wouldn't feel right giving you a ticket for log violations, so I am going to let you go."

To which I replied, "I have not violated logs." (I have e-logs, and I had not gone over on driving time.)

He then said, "Well, you're close."

I thought to myself, is being "close" on logs now a crime of some sort? He also gave me some lip service for having had done an 8/2 split a few days prior, as if that's also some kind of bad thing to do.

If he wants in he's gonna get in front back and any where in between. Ive had them do that and have said no. Some let it go others will push the issue. I open the door if they push it, I'm gonna lose that fight ultimately.

Op what exactly did he say you were logging wrong? I would have asked for specifics, sounds to me like he was trying to spook ya and get you to talk...

Oh, and the last one who asked me to open the door had a special trick up his sleeve. He said open your door so traffic doesn't hit me. My guess is when you open that door you have given him the legal right to search your truck. But! Don't quote me on that I'm guessing.

When I first started driving I had a scalemaster go through my log book with a vengeance. She also had a bear in the air at the time and she was hot to trot! She returned my log book and said it looked good, then wrote me up for no battery cover on the truck. Funny thing is, I had bunk time logged and was driving a day cab!

I've had one DOT officer in 10 years actually look at my logbook and really look at it. That was in Montana. The other times I have had it looked at they simply wanted to know that I had filled it out and current. Last year one night I took my break in Dunnigan Ca at the Pilot, woke up and took off without logging it. Wouldn't you know...got pulled in for an inspection several hours north still in California. That ticket was $670 dollars! Yea I'm the first one in line to pay up when I break the rules but that was pure BS and legal highway robbery. Sure, a few hundred bucks but $670? LUCKILY my employer paid that ONE ticket for me...that time. In case your ever wondering why some companies do not go to California this is why.

yup, I dare not to tell the tales of the wicked .......

fight The Law & The Law will win,......h'mmmm.....that gets me thinking so I am going to go look for professional counsel specializing in matters relevant to our industry ...... I delivered papers for bill collectors recently ~ sometimes legal professional at $340 an hour can be a lot cheaper than $34 / hour operating costs ......
