    Hauling Lube Trucks?

Just wondering.. Been hauling a few of these of late but todays load was different in that it had approx. 1600 gal. of diesel in the tank which among other things made it a wee bit "over gross" (another story) * It should be noted that all have various amounts of engine oil, lubricants etc. in the tanks but none to date have had this amount of fuel onboard

However it hit me that 1400 gal. of fuel should be placarded and authough there were visible?? placards on the truck I was hauling, there were none on my power unit / trailer. Then I thought Hmmmm Do I need a Hazmat endorsement to take this down the road? ( I have hazmat on my CDL ) BUT! I had no shipping papers telling what the Haz was, it's quantity, etc. all of which I'm thinking "after the fact" I should have had??

Going to go search FMCSA site to see what I can dig up. Any insight / experience "of the been there done that kind" would be appreciated

Haz-Mat and Tank endorsement would be my guess being as you are transporting both.

Your questions are valid as they represent a hazmat and tanker load, so you need both endorsements, plus the properly prepared hazmat BOL. Even empty, but not cleaned and purged requires the same. As to the placards, if they are properly applied to the load, or your vehicle does not matter, as long as they are the proper ones and are visible from all four sides.

I'am not sure about placards. If it wasnt a truck but a tank they would be called labels, and you would need placards on your trailer.

Labels go on individual packages, placards go onto vehicles.

Thanks for the insight Autocar. I did have the needed endorsements (my Haz endorsement is "X") but a proper Haz BOL .... well ... not so much on the trip in question. Perhaps I could be considered a Wrecker transport and say but officer I'm only moving it to a repair facility, it was broke down ??? No excuses I just plain and simple did not have my head in the game, and was fortunate enough to not be stopped and questioned. Chalk that one up to lady luck!

I recently hauled a truck that had propane tanks on the truck, we are not insured to haul hazmat and with 300 gallons on board also I told them they either would have to find a hazmat hauler or take them off the truck. So, they removed the tanks and made them remove the place cards also.

Ig your insurance does not cover hazmat and you do not have the endorsements they would have been not so nice if you were caught.

A question has been asked about whether tow truck drivers needed a hazmat endorsement to tow placarded vehicles . The answer is an endorsement is not needed for the first tow. Towing a disabled vehicle to remove it from the highway does not require an endorsement . Once the truck is dropped an endorsement is needed if it is towed again.
As far as a BOL goes I'd say your BOL should have noted the hazmat material .

As you stated is true, hauling off for a brake down is not an issue in most conditions. Hauling for commerce without being in compliance of the hazmat regulations to include tanks with fuel is a grey area that most DOT will take notice.
