06 has lots of problems I have heard.. Don't own one but was going to buy one in an 06 kw in 2009 and the SALESMAN talked be out of buy an more expensive truck with the ISX in it.. He recommended the cat.. His exact words were the c15 won't get but 6.2 mpg the isx will get about 7 but the cat won't be in the shop every other week.. I have been happy with the cat.. (it is one of 8 i own) while my friends that have isx's brag about the fuel mileage while they wait on the truck to get out of the shop.. in other words I think the salesman was right..

I have an '07 780 with the 530hp ISX, pre-DPF, so it is the same as the '06 model. At 519,000 I have replaced the EGR a few times, the turbo actuator once, and had a tune-up the the ECM flashed with the latest software.
I have a smoking between gears issue and when the cruise resumes in rolling terrain, but no fault codes, so they can't seem to figure out what to fix. In very cold weather, less than 15 degrees, it will sometimes stall when first started, like it isn't getting fuel, and I can see it on the Volvo dash screen showing the gpm fuel flow too, but they can't figure that out either. It also idles very roughly when cold, to which Cummins says "some of them do that".
Overall I have been happy with it since new, had my share of electrical gremlins too.
The '07 engine with the DPF, they moved the EGR to the non-turbo side of the engine, which helps its life span.
I may be due for a turbo with this, and I am on the original EGR cooler, both expensive repairs. -
The ISX has problems because of Government EPA regulations. IMO get a CAT if you can find one.

The one that im looking at is pre emissions no egr. Does that make a difference? Its an 06
-
That is pre dpf/def but still should have egr
-
Whats dpf. Never heard term

Diesel particulate filter. Comes on diesels after 07. Collects the soot turns it to ash. Has too be regenerated. Expensive and heavy.
-
EGR COMES after 04.
if you buy a cat. make sure it's not an acert
if you get a cummins. make sure it's a celect and not an isx.
if you get a detroit. the d60 is the way to go.
detroits get the best mileage but are weak in power. cats get the worse mileage. but strong on power. and expensive on oil changes. bout 50 extra.
i have the isx. they start croaking at about 1 mlll miles. and my last oil change jumped in price by 75. was told that oil filters are now 40 a peace instead of 7 a peace. the isx is famous for cams. eagr's. and turbos. and front covers leaking oil. and not a lot of shops want to touch an isx.
be weary of any motor that has a front cover. all the gears are on the outside instead of inside the notor. -
i may hate the 3 letters EGR more than DOT
replaces the egr cooler 3 times in the last 9 monthswhoopNride Thanks this.
