I have for all my seven years driving never driven more than 3-4 days a week...then home for at least 3 days....except when I had to do my 6 months with a big company starting out...
Obviously for other reasons than health but common sense always told me sitting for extensive time periods was un-healthy and now we have the report below. My advice to drivers who want less time but want to make the money....
Get with route companies that offer high dollar..direct routes.

Can still exercise on the road by brisk walking 2 or 3 time a week along with some jumping jacks. I always was OTR because that's what I prefer and ran hard with the best of them. Yes, you are right about extensive sitting and especially if one smokes & eats lots of junk foods. There are ways to overcome the risks of being sedentary. The trucking industry needs route drivers, local drivers, regional drivers & OTR drivers. We must all take personal responsibility for our health, one reason is most of us have families that depend on us. We fail our families if we ignore our health.

Any suggestions?

I haul oversize mainly, so between the chaining etc, then walking my German Shepherd every couple of hours, I guess I am kind of ok.
No doubt it is hard on the body, and after 20+yrs, I do feel it myself. But it pays the bills, and has provided me with a good enough living to allow my wife not to work, all our stuff being paid for, and the kids have what they need like insurance etc.
Everything comes with a price tag, no doubt about it.

I gotta drive 5 days but I only do it 7 hours. I used to haul oversized loads in my early years in this profession. Fun job.
