Last night I had the pleasure of meeting an older driver at a socoal event. I was suprised when he told me he is 76 years old and has been driving for 48 years. He did say that he is semi-retired and only drives 2 or 3 days a week on local runs and is home nightly. But he did say that occasionly he will make an overnight run. He said that thete is another driver at his company that is a year younger than him and there are several drivers that are around 70.
What age is the oldeast driver you know?

my trainer was 69 and that was in 1990. I don't think he's around anymore.

The other month I met a driver that retired, after 39 years in the Teamsters. That was in 1989. He then bought a truck and trailer and filed for his own Authority. He still runs, long-haul, pulling a stepdeck. 86 years old and not retiring anytime soon.

BTW, it's not unusual to meet up with a driver in their 70s, with Landstar's AA&E fleet.

Have a friend I have known all my life. He is 80 years old, always been an O/O, hauls tomatoes out of Florida during the winter to North-East, loads back with dairy products.2 years ago he was running next day delivery from his home here in North Florida to tom-a-to houses in Jersey, about 900 miles. Was making trip a week until last season, then he slowed to like 3 a month. Wife rides with him, but does not drive. All he has ever done is haul produce, told me he does not know how to quit..Those old timers are real truckers.

We had a guy retire from driving at 68 a few years ago, but he had been with the same company for 50 years.

That's awesome! My dad lived to be 105 years old. While not a trucker, he did buy a new Buick for his 85th bday and drove it until he was 90. He had put 3,600 miles on his care in those five years, lol. One of my sisters finally got his car key by convincing him that she needed the car more than he did, so he sold it to her (at a fair price).

    Maverick Griff Thanks this.

    My father.

He's 73 and still hauling equipment with our SD's and RGN. Started hauling milk (slugging milk cans on a flat bed) when he was 15 years old becuse he lied about his age to the guy that owned the milk route. Later he bought the milk route from the guy and has had his own authority in one form or another ever since. We've been trucking since 1955.

15 yrs old. Amazing stuff really. I do sometimes have a hard time getting him to follow all the FMCSA's rules though.

    ATX and Logan76 Thank this.
