APU's are great as long as they are working right. Also, as far as cost savings, they should not be ran all the time when the main motor is off. You shouldn't use the APu and the main motor together, any longer than you used to use just the main motor. Provided you actually tried to watch your overall idle time. At a company I used to work for, they decided to test APU's on some trucks. Well, the silly drivers then decided they could have one motor or the other on literally all the time. Figuring the cost of buying, installing, and operating them all the time the truck was parked, even when absolutely not needed, and they didn't see any savings at all. and didn't get them for the fleet either. Hour per hour, they are cheaper to operate. But if you left your truck shut off for ten hours safely and comfortably, or ran an APU for no reason for those ten hours, they will cost you more money, not save any.

My truck has an APU and the thing is fantastic. Runs off the diesel. Cools the truck and heats the truck just fine and saves lots of idling time. I drive an '07 Volvo and the
ThermoKing APU was installed when the truck was new. It has saved my company lots of money. (About half our trucks have APU's on them.) My truck is also getting 6.7
mpg between driving and using the APU. Not bad at all........ -
Are they worth the weight trade off?

Scale houses allow for 500-1000 extra on steers if you have an APU. As far as I know; there are only about 10 states that won't recognize the weight trade off.
