Well after a long day i made a rookie mistake. Locked my door, checked my pocket for my keys felt the peterbilt emblem shut the door walked inside took my keys outta my pocket and realized my keychain broke. Grabbed a light keys in the ignition doors locked great. Any vets out there ever had to crawl through a sleeper door to get their keys out? I hate being 110lbs when i have to tarp but if i were much bigger i dont think i wouldve fit through the sleeper door...or the one to get into the sleeper since my bed doesnt lift up. And its only tuesday think about how fridays gonna go haha. Any million milers out there ever had to do this?

You would be surprised how many keys fit multiple trucks. I did that with a Freightliner, and used the key from another Freightliner parked nearby that was an 0/0, and it unlocked my door.

Very true. I remember when clark bros was still clark bros and one key opened every door on their lot. Im getting a couple keys cut for my tractor tomorrow. When you think about it though it is kinda scary that one key will fit multiple trucks. Thatll make me sleep real good next time im at a truck stop or rest area.

I lucked out once in a '92 Peterbilt. I got out to wet a tire WAY in the back 40 of the truck stop I was sleeping at, the door only half unlocked when I got out and relocked when I shut it, I was wearing just some shorts. Luckily I was able to see my pants through a gap in the interior panels of the small right side-door of the sleeper. I used my fifth-wheel hook to drag my pants on the floor to the gap and got my keys. It was about 10 degrees outside. :biggrin_2559: Another time I got locked out I removed the oval peeper window in the right door, back when that was still possible to do relatively easily.

My car key will not only unlock my truck door but also start it. In all seriousness though, I probably put all 3 of those Locksmiths kids through college.

Lol man i dont feel as bad now it was 16 out and i was fully clothed lol. I tried what worked on the 95 and 96 model sleeper escape doors. Hit about 2" above the lock and the door would pop open didnt work this time. I was just glad i didnt lock my safety triangle door otherwise it was call triple a in the morning lol.

indeed it is. twice in my career ive actually opened the door of the wrong truck by accident (both times i was tired and not planning on driving anywhere, not that that makes it less stupid). one time no one noticed, just relocked the door and went on, other time driver was strolling toward the truck as i quickly closed the door and apologized profusely. cant tell me they dont have the technology to make more than the (30?) different keys for each model truck. another example of how little respect truck drivers get, even from truck manufacturers that are looking to save a few dollars at the expense of driver safety.

as to op original question...never thought of doing that. im also one of the few who probably could. but after locking myself out a few times in the first couple years, i always carry a spare key in my wallet, and zip tie one somewhere under the hood outta sight.

When i drove FLD ,on my very first trip i left keys inside the truck and locked it.I had no idea what to do,then guy parked next to me came and told me to take out that little window on the bottom of the passenger side door.I did it and somehow rolled the window down and got my keys.It was pain in the **** to put that window back.Few months later, different company, new truck(prostar),my co-driver forgot keys and we unlocked it with my friend's 2009 volvo key.

Not saying i'm better, iv done a lot of things that are dumb. But in over 20 years of trucking, i have never locked my self out. That truck is my home, and I do not ever intend to spend my time locked out of my home, no matter what. That's just me, sorry it happen to you.
