I usually only run between San Diego and Sac, but I gotta good load that need to go to Alturas from Morongo Valley (near 29 Palms), and was wondering if there's any trouble running the small stretch of the 395 that goes though Carson City and Reno without a MC#? I only run Commufornia so never had need for a MC- is there a coop that I'll have to buy trip permits at or can I just drive through with not getting hassled? Thanks guys!

Legally you shouldn't but there aren't any scales if you run it at night you prolly won't see very many cars anyway.

Haven't gone yet, how can I get a permit in one day? Call the NV DOT? Would I be better off just taking the 5 all the way to the 299 out of Redding? It "only" adds 120 miles and about an hour, I'm thinking that might be a better bet especially since the 395 is a PITA to drive. Thoughts?

Just talked to NV DOT, and the permit is only $80, the fuel I'll burn going the long way is almost covered by the permit cost, so I figured the extra $16 pays for peace of mind and an hour! Done deal- I may run through Ca on the way back depending on where I can get a backhaul, otherwise it's only $5 for the milage back through the 395.
