Thank you for the information Floyd. My husband needs to pass this test and he gets anxious before Dr's appointment, this increases his BP reading. Did you take this before your appointment? Thank you kindly. Rosa

This issue came up with me again when I went renew my medical certificate earlier this week. My BP is now around 150 due to extremely poor diet, constant intense rage, and hyperbolic stress levels. I tried to go into my usual hypnotic trance to lower my BP (trying to get lower than 139), but it didn't work. This time the doctor told me to lie down. Then she came back 15 minutes later, I got up, but she told me to lay back down.

She then took the reading while I was laying down (which I don't think is correct). Then she said "oh, 120/80", which in no way possible could be true. I'm not sure if the laying down made that much difference or she helped me by 'cheating'. Now I just have to figure out how to pass the vision at the DMV because I am borderline on that too. In the doctor's office it is a lot easier because I could see the chart beforehand without being too obvious.

I was in a group of about 200 people moving through physicals before going to Afghanistan. When some of the people had slightly high or borderline high BP readings, they had them lay down and waited a few minutes before taking their BP again. For the people that sill had high readings (laying down), the Physicians Assistant would actually hold the persons legs up which apparently helps reduce BP as well. Not one person failed the BP testing.

No, I didn’t work for KBR. I was with a company that was partnered with DynCorp. DynCorp had the southern part of Afghanistan and Fluor had the north. KBR had most of the contracts in Iraq but did have some contracts in AFG too.

I think most civilian contractors are out of AFG now that troop levels have been greatly reduced. You can search ‘LOGCAP jobs’ and see what turns up. Don’t consider anything driving related though; you won’t live more than a few paychecks. I used to have a bunch of pictures of trucks the Taliban shot full of holes.

If you have skills outside of driving, look into US Aid jobs, Overseas Building Operations jobs, DoD jobs. There is also a US program that has job openings in Africa at times but I can’t think of the name of the program.

Those are notoriously inaccurate...usually on the high side in an effort to get you to run to the doctor and get on some medication. If you want a good BP reading, get a nurse to read it the old way with a manual cuff and a stethoscope. Also, if you know that your BP is usually good, and then you get a high reading from a mechanical reader, chances are that they are using the wrong cuff size for your arm. A cuff that is too small for your arm will cause a high reading. Vice versa for a cuff that is too large. And/or the machine is a piece of crap.

-My wife is a nurse. I get to hear about this stuff all the time.

Stop stressing. Lay off that caffinee. Lay off anything that dehydrates you. Drink good fluids normally. Eat a decent meal.

Enjoy your visit to the doc. The numbers will come out one way or another. Worrying and stressing about it will ensure you will not have good numbers.

Keep in mind most people have a certain value of BP that is good for them My Spouse carried 100/60 most of the time. If I was that low It's nap time for me I used to fight with 140 over 90+ decades ago. I carry 125 over 84 now which I think isnt too bad but a touch too high for trucking cosnidering the two cardiac reasons behind that value. A cup of coffee or stressing about the test BP machine will take me to 145/110 in a few minutes which will destroy whatever good there is that morning.
