My cousin is having a hard time finding work. She has 12 years OTR, took 4 years off so she could raise her kids through high school and now no one will touch her. I tried getting her on with YRC but no go there either. She tells me the companies tell her she either needs to go back to trucking school and/or she has too much of an employment gap to be hired. WTF has happened to this industry? When I started trucking it was easy to get a job. Hell, they were begging you to work and hired you with the bare minimum. Even the bottom feeders won't touch her. Her MVR is spotless and no criminal record, no problems medically. I have tried helping her find a job but don't have much time to and haven't had any luck. It seems they really don't like the employment gap of 4 years, seems to be a big issue. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
Took some time off and can't get a job!

This is just a suggestion for her. Craigslist is flooded with ads by Western Express hiring drivers who have been away from trucking for a while. It says they have some type of refresher course that is no charge for it. They would help her out from what it says. Good Luck

That happened to me too, stay away from the big companies, best chance is an O/O, I had to start with a small co. Good Luck!

From what I understand she might need to take a refresher course. After not driving for 4 years I think that's a reasonable request.
Best of luck to her. -
Its the INSURANCE COMPANIES that push for the retraining / refreshing courses after being off the road for a few years

Where does she live?

Forget the big fleet companies. Dont even waste your time.
Look for owner ops hiring. Make some phone calls. They pay better and less BS. Most owner ops dont have time to train and deal with all the hoops required with new drivers, much less having to baby sit an incompetent driver. I had a 15 yr gap and thats the route I went. I had to take some grief with first company I was with,.. but learned a few things and now with a much better company.
With only 1yr recent, I was hired at .42 cpm, tarp pay, detention pay, asked to be out at least 3 - 4 weeks. I'm usually out 5 - 6. But getting home after only 3 is no problem. I'm home for 5 - 7 days when I am home. I run at my own pace. All the miles I can handle. They dont want to babysit and I hate to be bothered. Leave me alone and let me do my job. This Jan will mark 2 yrs back in the seat for me. I couldnt be happier.
There are many companies out there like who I work for. My guy isnt hiring anymore drivers. He's only taking on other owner ops and has been encouraging me to either buy this truck or buy my own and run through this authority. Will ride out my current situation as long as I can before buying my own truck. Less work and stress for me right now.Last edited: Nov 20, 2013
MadMax17 Thanks this. -
just because she been out of trk for 4 years that dismisses the 12 years of experience she should ask them same carriers can she start out as a trainees I did same thing I took 3 years off til my daughter got older I went thru 3 companies 2 land where I am now I hate 2 say but I started out with cr england they are the only ones that would give me a chance. But I had 2 go thru all their programs. Aim for companies that have training programs. She may have 2 suggest it 2 the company she talk 2. Had a friend to take off 5 years and schidner was only one would hire him but he had 2 train for couple wks until he got his own trk
