    ..at the most inconvenient times..
    2013 Freightliner Cascadia, Cummins 400 ISX 16
driving normally, then engine shuts off, all lights, everything.... then off, then on again, twice more. Came on and stayed on.
Of course I was driving thru mountains at night, there were a couple trucks ahead of me, so I could follow them, but dang, it's way dark in the middle of Montana.
Yelled back at Allen (my mentor, he was sleeping, we're team driving)...what to do... actually nothing, just wait.

I did smell diesel exhaust for a few hours before it cut off. Engine seemed louder than normal, but after cutting off and back on, seemed to have regenned, and ran quieter.
Then he tried a regen, seemed to just get hot and shut off, don't know if it finished regen or not.

But, not a fun thing to happen. Anyone have any ideas?
Right now we're sitting in Portland waiting for the Cummins mech to show up at Freightliner Monday. Ran from near Buffalo to Portland in 3+ days, truck ran well, but the regen and EGR stuff didn't.
Could be worse, tho... we could be back in Texas where it's even colder.
Y'all take care and stay warm and safe.
    Mary

Are the "check engine" lights coming on? Does this usually happened shortly after start up?

One thing to monitor is the radiator fluid level. If it gets below the fill line it can cause the engine to shut off. There is a sensor that gets tripped and will shut off the engine if the fluid gets low in the reservoir.

The check engine light came on after. There was a very slow leak caused when the B service mech did not fully tighten the cooling sys filter couple days before. Was just a drip, but I don't think it lost more than a quart. Was corrected before the dying engine symptoms.....
    thanks

Nope, Allen actually checks that stuff. He even gets the engine steam cleaned when the truck gets washed. Checks the cables and hoses and stuff regularly.
Some of the roads we run on are not very smooth tho.... I actually slow down a bit when I get shaken off the seat....<G>
Well, it fells like I'm about to get shaken off the seat.
    Take care

Could be a fuse. Check and make sure they are all pushed in snuggly. I had a similar issue in a 2007 Pete 387. The lights on the dash would act odd for a few seconds. Then I lost the dash completely for a few seconds. Then a few minutes later the entire thing just shut down. Barely made it to the side of the road. Just as I was talking to road service I checked the fuses and what do you know, one came loose. Popped it back in and all was well.

Just had this exact problem in Augusta GA last week. The truck is still down there. Ryder is paying Frieghtliner to look at it.

Check your batteries, we had 4 dead cells. But that wasn't the problem, but it might be a symptom.

Lucky for me my outfit just put me in a sub truck and got me back north. Hopefully they'll fix it before you read this post.
