I've never been on a military installation where civilian weapons were banned - but there's a lot of installations I've never been to. On the face of it, though, it seems a little... um... far fetched. A base with 10,000 well armed 20-somethings is going to worry about 1 - or even 50 - civilians with handguns?

Now, Federal courthouses, yeah - just like about any other government building - weapons are banned. When was the last time of us delivered to a courtroom?
Ummmm Lurch?? A military installation IS a government installation. I wasn't allowed to carry on base unless I was transporting my firearm from the armory to the range (off base). Funny thing, too. Most base regulations state you have to carry your firearm (unloaded) in the trunk of your vehicle. Since I had a pickup and a motorcycle, I once asked how the heck do I transport it without getting into trouble? The look on the guy's face was priceless.

How about a good old fashioned paintball marker. hurts like hell...can sound like a gun, and you can unload alot of paint on someone, then they are marked, and easier for cops to find. =)

lol- slammed that point into my head, didn't yah?

but I was differentiating between a military base and - say - a weapons plant.

I admit my experience with bases is limited - but I was never called to task for wandering around armed on the ones where I was stationed.

(ok - 'wandering' is definitely the wrong word - I was going from point A to point B.. but I WAS in mufti and on foot most of the time)

I've read recently that some folks were using Hornet and Wasp spray as a deterrent. Inexpensive and sprays a long distance. Is rumored to be very effective. Just a thought...haven't really researched the idea

you'd probably be better off, legally speaking, to just shoot someone. doesn't it say on the can something to the effect of "using this in a manner not intended is a violation of federal law...." the government can get away with using chemical weapons on its subjects, (or torturing them, or incarcerating them without a trial,) but if a civilian did that, he might find himself up the creek without a paddle.
