Questions for drivers & O/O's running Super Singles on the tractor

1) Carry a spare?

Nope, but long term I should. You can norm buy some single at almost any truckstop. It might not be the one you want and it may be a trailer tire. I'll prob buy what er is availible and then shortly after replace with the correct tire and keep the mismatch as the spare.

2) Is the spare pre mounted on a wheel?

I wouldn't pre mount. The rims are harder to damage then people think. One of the main ideas behind singles is the weight savings. You loose that if you carry an extra rim to. I had a trailer single blow out (company trailer). I probably drove 200 miles on it before I arrived without noticing it. When I arrived at company yard, the tire was gone, but the rim was fine. Oddly it didnt bounce or feel any different missing one tire. It was a real heavy load to. It was at night so much harder to see the tire come off.

3) Where is the spare mounted?

If you own your trailer your best bet is mounting under the trailer. You can keep one spare single fore all 8 positions and if a trailer blows, replace with trailer tire asap but runt he drive spare there until you can buy the right one.

I dont own my trailer and that is why i dont have a spare yet. some mount on the frame but i dont have room. Others mount right behind the cab, but then your 5th needs to be further back

 

No spare, i check tire psi everyday and inspect tires everyday for foreign objects. Remove stones etc. Ha
ve 350,000 on my xdn2's and have had no problems

 

No. Besides - a spare tire, rim, mounting bracket, jack, lug wrench, etc is going to add 500lbs to your truck. That'll lower mpg by about 0.001% -- a difference that will more than pay for a road call after a year or two.

 

We carry a regular 295/75R22.5 tire mounted on a rim. We don't have singles on our trailers yet so a spare wide single wouldn't work. The regular single tire can be used anywhere. If needed we can mount the single on the tractor and limp home. As long as you don't overload it you can run a single regular tire in place of the wide single.

 

personally i DESPISE my super singes on the tractor. would much rather have the duals. crappy traction in snow/ice even with new tread. so not looking forward wo when the wear out

 

The company I'm leased to runs singles on all their trailers (Spread axles to boot), so every trailer carries an unmounted spare tire. They fit perfectly up beteen the frame rails, you would swear the trailer as designed for it or the tires were designed to fit there. I was initially a skeptic, have become a believer. I am trying to persuade the dealer I am buying my next truck from to swap the duals for singles.

 

i run the xdn2 wide singles open shoulder and run the northwest and western states and have no issues with traction. I usually get 2 winters out of them and just before the 3 winter they're ready to come off. Usually down to 8/32nd's by then. Get good trade in on them from local tire dealer about 240.00 a piece.

 

If it is your own truck i would put a in cab tire monotoring system and no spare.
