Ive been driving in alaska for the last 5 years trucks dont play the light flash game up north.Since Ive been in the lower 48, ive forgotten to flash my lights at times or just not worried about it. I have been cursed out on the radio several times and had one guy hit his breaks in front of me. I am the type of person that will help some one out and not just sit back and make fun or bad mouth but I guess I dont get the whole light thing . When that truck behind you flashes his lights and you get over into a car whos fault is it? I have to make sure im clear before i move regardless of the if the truck flashes his lights. one thing ive learned driving truck is trust no one because when you hit somthing no one else is gonna take the blame or the ticket. I have respect for other drivers on the road but to me the light flash thing is kinda pointless.

I grew up learning the unwritten rules of the road. Late at night, turning your lights off and on was the way I was taught. It does help for several reasons and it can be dangerous.

    Dangerous:
    A. Not paying attention and flashing after a trailer passes, and not checking to see if it is a set of doubles or tripples.

    B. Flashing brights and dims into someone's rear view mirror blinds people.
However, many drive with their brights on all the time now days and they don't care about blinding others.

    Helps:
    A. Lets a driver know to check his rear view mirror and move over.
    B. Helpful on long night runs. Breaks the monotony and shows courtesy.
    C. A sign of respect for other drivers.

From the safety side of it, I don't see why some think there is something wrong with signaling others it is ok to change lanes. Like anything else, it takes common sense.

I would imagine that up in Alaska, the bear and moose don't pay much attention to flashing lights as they do as they please anyway!:biggrin_25523:

Where did you drive in Alaska? I used to live there and I owned a business that did random drug testing for the DOT. I sure miss living there. Would go back tomorrow if I could. I agree with you on the flashing thing, but seems to be what you have to do down here. Good luck to you. How is the pay for drivers up in AK now?

I still flash my lights and don't care if I get acknowledged for it. There are more important things in life to get worked up about. As many of you know I drive the Northeast most of the time and courtesy is something that is usually lacking. That and use of the English language. There are many times I signal to change lanes and don't get flashed. I don't say a word. I just make my lane change and go on my merry way.
