    Hi Truckers,
I am a project manager working with a major transportation company to try and determine the best satellite enabled device for crude workflow.
We are considering the Omnitracs (Qualcomm) MCP200 vs. the PeopleNet BLU.2.
The MAIN point of consideration is driver friendliness, then quality, then satellite signal coverage.
Have you used both, or either of these units? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Please identify the unit you use, and provide input on any of the following:
    1. Does unit break down often?
    2. How long before you latch on to a satellite signal?
    3. Are there areas with no coverage?
    4. Does screen go blank at times?
    5. What do you like best about the unit?
    6. What do you hate most?

    Thanks,
    Sam

    We use Peoplenet blue 2.

    Breaks down often.
    Coverage OK,
    Some dead spots not many.
    Yes. Blank stares at times.
I like nothing about the unit.
I hate the fact it is slow. I mean REALLY slow. Touch icon. Wait. Wait. Wait more.

You cannot dim screen far enough.

Keyboard is cheap junk. Often won't respond to unit. Needs hard reboot daily.

Windows based - so not surprised.

I have had the Qualcomm unit for a few years. Only about3 or 4 times has it lost signal and I had to go to paper. It's pretty solid

    Samkanj Thanks this.

I've only ever used qualcomm units. The one in my truck is the MCP200.

Hasn't broke down yet. Old unit in my last truck an MCP100 died once and got replaced.
Stays connected about 95% of the time. Tunnels and the like will throw it off.
A few dead spots nothing I don't drive though eventually.
Occasionaly it's slow to come back on after the screens been off a while
Lots of options, I can check my remaining drive time with a button. Slide out keyboard saves space on the dash.
Wish it had a larger screen, some times I have to squint. Wish my particular unit wasn't mounted to the dash. Makes it hard to get to the 5'th wheel and air bag release buttons.

    Samkanj and blairandgretchen Thank this.

Qualcomm mcp200 is a awesome unit. It's fast, rarely has any problems, user friendly, all touch screen but has a slide out keyboard. Only thing I suggest is to get the mount where you put it in a swivel arm on the dash. If not the cord gets breaks in it and you will have problems with the unit. The ones mounted on the dash don't have this problem.

Did I mention how much I hate the Peoplenet system?

OK. Its a 3 legged dog with a mean temper.

You guys have no idea how valuable your feedback is. I hope to get a few dozen responses. This kind of collaboration can push companies to design better systems. Unfortunately, there's not much incentive given that you basically have 2 options in the market when it comes to satellite. Thanks again.

Used Peoplenet Blue (1-2.0) for a good while.

Blu is a POS. Lost signal quite often, constant problems and lots of breakdowns. Seemed like every other month I was pulling into the shop to try and diagnose yet another random problem.
Most common break down was the GPS unit going out, typically followed by cellular transmitter burning out, followed by total failure.

More than once had to have the whole unit replaced.

Blaire is 100% on spot, needed rebooting every single day. Keyboard included sucks, on screen keyboard was even worse. Difficult and slow to input info, which is amazing when you're running empties all over town and switching trailer/load numbers every 1-2 hours. Whenever you were working a "Secured/forced" message, it was like watching grass grow, when it came to typing.

    Can't speak for qualcomm.

On paper logs now, glad of it.

    Unit: MCP-200

    1. Only time mine broke was when it fell out of the cradle and cracked the screen when it hit gear shift handle. Screen was disabled but there is a USB plug to plug in a mouse to bypass the dead screen
    2. Can't speak for satellite. My company uses the cell phone/data network.
    3. Occasionally, in the hinter lands, I lose the cellular network.
    4. Not blank. But once in a blue moon, the screen will be non-responsive, but the remedy is easy and quick with a long button press.
    5. Everything. User intuitive and friendly.
    6. Nothing I can think of.

    Samkanj Thanks this.
