I've been searching all over the internet trying to find the answer tonight to a question that is pretty important. I have even tried the highway patrol, they aren't answering the phone. I even tried the ncdot, no answer. Here's the question. The tunnel on i40 in North Carolina, is it restricted to haz mat? I know that some tunnels, like the ones on the pa turnpike allow certain kinds of hazmat to go thru them.
Is the North Carolina i40 tunnel hazmat restricted?

According to a thread last November, there aren't any restrictions.

Then again, that thread really didn't specify whether they were talking about the tunnel or the gorge.Luann Thanks this. -

You chose a great forum for questions and advice, but when it comes to hauling hazmat, you need to ask your company and plan your route before leaving.Does your company have hazmat briefing you must call once you get the bill from the shipper? They would know what tunnels you are allowed to go thru.

FWIW...'veI come across a couple of tunnel in SF Bay area the are restricted for " Flammable"...but not "Combustible". IE: Gas vs: Diesel loads.

as you ride through the tunnel, drop a gear and roll your windows down and engage the jake.then accelerate and let off and listen again.you'll get off on the sound echoing off the walls.if you are going east, not too many bears to worry about probably.headed west, well, north carolina's finest will probably have you well protected in that long slow section.they hang around the 15 mm a good bit and will dot you in that rest area, especially the east bound side.
have your ducks in a row at the scale house near ashville, both sides.also that area is one beautiful ride regardless of the time of year.enjoy. watch for falling rock, that indian that seems to get around and cause havoc in many areas.he shut that highway down a few years ago.
also over the tn line headed east, that beautiful 70 mph sign is about 5-6 miles in i am thinking.you can hit the left lane and pass all those 58-65 mph 'trucks" and extricate yourself from that endless cluster.trucks get backed up through the gorge and it is nice to move on and away provided that the left lane less than the speed limit runners stay right where they belong.those scales,to my knowledge, have not been open in ten years.Last edited: Apr 20, 2014
