Are there time limits when you supposed to file the ucr, i just got my dot number last week and im getting emails and snail mail from my home state rev dept saying it can carry a 100 up to a 500 per day fine, when does the clock start? How do they even know if ive been across state lines? hell ive not even left the house yet, still getting ins quotes and tag time.

My state won't even allow me to purchase my base plate without having paid my UCR. The UCR is one of the least expensive taxes you will pay in this business. You can contact your state revenue department (IRP office) and they should be able to answer your questions. You should also be able to do a search for UCR and follow the link. It stands for Unified Carrier Registration. The cost is based upon how many power units you have operating under your authority. You can pay it online once your authority is active.

There are a few states whop may not participate. You can go to the official UCR website and find most of what you want to know. There are several companies that will do all the leg work for you for a fee but you can do it easily yourself and save the extra cost. I think the fee is $76 for up to 2 trucks.

UCR replaced SSR (Single State Registration). There's like 10 states that don't participate (FL is one of them) but they do enforce it (go figure how - but they do). It's cheap and easy, and there's no cab card BUT we always print out the page we paid it on just in case. You can file it in any participating state. It's an online deal unless you want to jump through ten tons of hoops.

Most of us use IN as the filing point because it's easy and fast and they were the first to do it online so they have the system down pat. It'll take me more time to write this than it will for you to set up and pay using IN's site. You can pay it as early as October but like IFTA, it's not actually DUE for renewal til 12/31. Pay it early and be done with it, IN site lets you print a receipt: print it and add it to your permit book. This is probably the EASIEST and cheapest of all the digs they throw at you having your own authority. Best of luck in your venture and be SAFE! Here's IN's site:

I think most owners will sign up with an adjoining state as they do with IFTA. You might check the UCR website to see if you need to pay for this year prior to renewing in October for 2015. You may not need to pay for this year since you just got your authority. The easiest way to check would be to call your state IRP office and just ask them. I usually pay my UCR early so that I don't need to think about it.
