    Looking for advice on trucking companies in my area(Twin Cities)......I opted to pay the $4000 for school, rather than be owned by a company with a repayment plan or long contract.

    So I am starting a new career at 54 yrs old.....I don't mind being OTR for 2-3 weeks, I would just like to be home a couple of days every few weeks to deal with house stuff, etc. School offers lifetime placement with large number of companies....Swift, Prime, Dart, US Xpress, Schneider, Conway, CRST, etc. But being new to the industry, the only thing I know about most of these companies is their logos on trucks I have passed on the freeway!!

    I have been told that it's best to choose a company with a terminal close to me, otherwise home time is greatly affected...... Schneider bulk looked good to me, but no terminal.....couple of drop yards though...and an office in St Paul. I've seen Swift, Prime, & couple of other large company terminals.....but they all seem to be the "bottom feeders" from what I have read.
    School by the way is "Interstate Truck Driving School" and seems to have a good reputation, they list over 30 company's that use them for recruiting grads.

    Looking to drive for 15 years or more, and would like to start & stay with a company...... but seems like that doesn't happen much. Need to make about $900 gross per week, and not sure if I can expect this or not.

    Thanks in advance for your advice!

    Here's some to consider, but I would go knock on some doors of tanker outfits such as Praxair & others;

    We Offer:

    • $1,000 Sign On Bonus!

    Hi
    I am a truck driver and employer. And my congratulations, not every person passes exams. Being a new CDL driver, it will be hard for someone to hire you. Just because their insurance companies require 2 years of experience.
    So, I personally would suggest you to chose one of the companies your school is offering. You can drive with them for few months, you will meet people on truck stops. You'll see how other's work.
    But for a beginner, just go with the ones school has on the list. Schneider is really good company. And good luck!

    Congratulations. Being a newly licensed CDL driver it is hard to find a company to take you on due to the insurance issue. Most school help with finding a job but the pay is on the company. I went to school as well and after went to Swift but they were only starting you out at .25cpm and that wasnt enough but that is average...their are local companies that will take you if you go through their training program but you have to commit for at less a year. Conway Freight is looking for new drivers and is offering a large bonus due to their turnover rate but they are great with training, insuring safe drivers but you have to learn how to drive doubles and have all endorsement.
    Look locally first before otr...you can make alot more and be home daily possibly off weekends. With the pending winter coming being close to home might be best.
    If i can assist you with names of possible companies email me steven.g.fuller@gmail.com
    I am in illinois but i know onces here tht have those programs so maybe they are in MN.
