I am a farm kid in indiana and will be trucking grain for my dad in the next couple months. We have a ken t800 60 Detroit with super ten. We will mainly haul grain but we haven't purchased a trailer yet. He is the one buying it so he wants to know which one is the lightest, and which one is the most bang for the buck. And what to get on them. He's looking to spend around 15k. If we get a dump we will haul more than just grain. But he wants to know how much we can haul of grain in each one since that's the main thing I will be hauling. The truck already has a wet kit on it. Any help or experience?

A hopper will weigh less and is safer and cheaper,,Depends on what you plan to haul,,if grain and fertilizer is your plan the hopper is the way to go,,end dumps turn over very easily ,,

We want the ability to haul dirt and so on, but the grain is what will make us money. We're looking at a 00 39' Mac dump for 17k I believe. Very nice trailer. That's my favorite. Then at the same dealer they have a 01 timpte 40' that's missing some lights but that looks like it for 15800. He just wants to max our available profit. But would like to have the dump for versatility. They are both air ride I believe, and the timpte has aluminum wheels

i am a farm kid in Indiana and will be trucking for my dad in the next couple months. We have a KW t800 with wet kit. Hauling grain for other farmers along with adm will be what it is mainly used for. And what makes the money. But he also wants an end dump for dirt, lime, ect. But since grain is what we will be making money with, he wants to make sure that we can maximize load out. He says he will most likely buy a hopper but wanted to look to see if we could haul the same amount in each trailer. Right now we're looking at a 01 timpte 40' and a 00 Mac end 39'. Any thoughts? He's looking to spend around 15k. But will go a little higher for a good deal

End dump gives you the ability to haul more diverse variety of freight. Your empty weight will be heavier than a hopper. If you want to be able to haul agricultural lime, rock, dirt and so on you need an end dump. A hopper is safer and lighter but less versatile. Yes , end dumps are dangerous and will turn over. Ol boy used to say there are two kinds of dump trailers , those that have been turned over and those that havent ben turned over........yet. Maybe think about getting you an older trailer that costs less to start out with in case you get in trouble you wont be tearing up as much. If you choose to go with a dump trailer find someone with experience to ride with or ride wit you and show you the right way to handle the situations you will be encountering. Maybe a frame type trailer to start with until you get more experience. If your gonna be hauling grain out in the country you will soon learn that what it weighs empty doesnt matter. Farm to market around here where you load without a scale is 88,000 and pretty much everyone hauls whatever they can get on. Load the wagon then put the "graveyard hump" over the tarp bows. I prefer end dump just because we can haul our own lime and rock. Get good insurance and hope you dont need it but dont let that spook you off . The greatest danger in an end dump for beginners is you dont realize you have gotten yourself in a dangerous situtation until your in trouble or its over. Good Luck!

A couple of months ago I bought a 2002 Doepker (sp) hopper. 53 ft, two compartment, tandem axle (61" spread = 42,000 lbs in Ontario) plus a third lift axle. I had 94,886 lbs net on when I delivered my wheat a couple weeks ago and I was still 2 ft below the sides. I paid $15,000 CDN and they have another for sale but it's in Ontario built for Canadian law. If you don't need to worry about the law it's a monster. I think it was built for hauling feathers.
