I had eight of those situations today. They were all around Alexandria LA, never really thought of that place being comparable to NYC.
All eight of my stops today around there though seemed to be the toughest backing, traffic, and stressful situations I have yet experienced.
To top it all off when I was heading out at the end of my day along LA 13 they had it down to one lane of traffic, and yet traffic was still somehow going both ways.
Today was special.
Ever leave a receiver just happy to make it out alive?

California-style motoring has been at least a 49 state epidemic for ~20 years, which is one big reason YOU have to be more careful every second your brakes are not set.
It's getting worse, not better. The typical motorist of today could not maintain a license for a year in the '60s. Comparatively, today, traffic enforcement doesn't even exist. Budget slashing and the War On Drugs. -
One company I worked for was based out of NJ, we pulled a lot of stuff out of the ports in Newark and the Island, including OD stuff. Plus most of our backhauls went into either the Newark area, the 5 boroughs, or Baltimore/Philly. Needless to say I felt like this almost every time. You do get used to it after a while and especially once you know the routes you have to take. Having to double (or triple in some cases) park to get unloaded can be nerve-wracking, but when in Rome ya know. The way I always looked at it was what doesn't kill me makes me a better truck driver.
mjfreespirit Thanks this. -
Not since I quit pulling dry vans, and thank God on that!

After all these years of doin ltl I no jus how ya feel....but ya jus gotta make a game outta it&njoy it. And as for double pkg to unload.....nothin I like more....pull down a street in Bklyn...(or anywhere really)set the brakes...grab my meathooks&chain....wait on the forklift......then spend the next hour or so pulling 24 pallets out 1@a time....while they honk their horns & eventually back outta the street.....doesn't make us completely even.....but does at least give some of em lil taste o their own medicine.....makes my day.....course I'm funny that way
Cranky Yankee and 25(2)+2 Thank this. -
I went to a place way back in probably 2006or 7, that had to be delivered elsewhere, a lot of loads are ordered for someone by someone else with an address, and sometimes you end up going elsewhere to deliver.
This place was in what the 'locals' called the 'hood, run down and just plain not a very nice place to see, and hard to get into and out of with narrow streets, speed bumps and overhead obstructions, including a 13'0" railroad underpass just next to the dock doors.
How things change, last time there, the plant was being run lightly by a different entity, and that neighborhood is almost clean, and I think the former working girls are now neighborhood watch and school crossing guards. Almost weird going there, now.
Still plenty of places that will try your skill, and maybe make you wonder if your life insurance is paid up. -
I've picked up and delivered to some pretty bad areas from a bad neighborhood to tight turns to horrible backing to customers with bad attitudes, but never thought of just happy to be alive.I more or less thought just another fun filled day in the life of being a truck driver.
