Last week Travis Gordon, who I'm told heads up Gordon's refrigerated fleet, announced a pay increase that starts on November 2, 2014, and includes that Gordon will pay detention after 1 hour of wait time.
Will your company follow Gordon's lead, and offer detention after 1 hour?
That's big. Potentially structural if HTLD/GTI competitors feel they have to match, and especially good news for refrigerated drivers who get long runs and long waits at shippers.
Apparently this pay increase and detention after 1 hour applies to ALL over 4,000 Heartland/GTI trucks, too, with a footprint heavy in the Mid-West and West. And although Gordon doesn't name names, the announcement makes clear the intention to bring over drivers from competitors. Where else to find the largest pool of good, qualified and experienced drivers but in the big fleets of their competitors?
This pay increase comes on the heels of pay increases announced by Swift, Con-way and USXpress, among others. But those increases for a penny here, a penny there mean little with often paltry paychecks that fluctuate with TL's unpredictable miles. Changing the rules on detention's something different.
It's like Mike Gerdin responding, "Oh, yeah? Then I'll match your increase and raise you!! Match that!!" As drivers get experience, they move on to greener pastures... Will 'new' experienced drivers move over to Heartland/Gordon?
What do you think, will detention after 1 hour spread????
If Gordon pays detention after 1 hour... will your company follow?

Seems like a good opportunity for other haulers to sneak into customers and increase their base. Making a statement about strategy with customers allows other the opportunities to use that as part of their negotiation tactic.

Im starting to think we are on the cusp of a wage war in the industry. Wages have been stagnant for a long time, long enough for someone to start making the same if they flipped burgers for the same amount of time we actually put in in a week 80-90 hours. With that happening people are deciding to say screw it and go home. Not to mention that baby boomers are starting to retire en masse, and CSA2010 taking a large bite out of the driver pool. Chances are good that driver shortage that hasn't been one for the last 6 years might actually materialize. Good thing for us if you are good at OTR.

Firstoff, in dollars and cents, how much is the increase. the true measure of a pay package is the sum of the whole. Simular to the SIGN-ON BONUS,
inticements come directly from profit. Beware the front end of a gift, as someone is picking your back pocket. Companies are only going to pay a set amount, the shell game of add here and take there never changes. The proof is looking at present rates, when you add in the current rate of inflation we as professionals are still making the same dollars we did in 1984. A duck is a duck, just because it tastes good bar-b-qued, don't make it steak. -
Agreed.
What are the actual figures?
These "6-13% across the board" speeches sound great from the press conference.
To the driver with ears still ringing with 2008-2009 pay CUTS - what is the bottom line ?900,000-tons-of-steel and drvrtech77 Thank this. -
I wonder how they define wait time.
A good step nonetheless. -
There is annother piece missing to answer the question. Rate of pay for detention.
That affects total compensation.
The 1 hour detention is a great talking point but with previous 2 hour detention we are talking a net change of $20 to $50 per week. Not enough to entice me to them or retain me to them with the low net miles.blairandgretchen and tow614 Thank this. -
I wish all carriers did that then maybe the customers will get the lead out.
900,000-tons-of-steel Thanks this. -
Like Heartland's 50cpm, this is just another misdirection. What matters is the total amount earned at the end of the year. Gordon pays 2cpm less than the going rate. Heartland's high nominal rate is offset by shorting miles 10%, not reimbursing tolls, & focusing on shorter hauls that require more babysitting than driving.
But "detention after 1 hour" & "up to 50cpm" sound good on Craigslist, so they'll probably convince some to jump ship after a bad week at their current carriers only to ultimately wind up making the same money, but now have fewer good options thanks to a hyperactive work history... -
Travis Gordon....rather work with Jeff Gordon.
