Hi Guys and Gals,
15 days ago, my husband was asleep at a weigh station on I-495 by the nations capital.While he was sleeping a 4 wheeler slammed into the side of the truck and did $12,500 worth of damage.He was shaken up but thank God he was uninjured.He filed a police report and being the truck was able to be driven, drove the truck to a repair center where our company requested to take it.Obviously it wasn't DOT legal and now my husband has been staying at a truckstop hotel in MD.I have no clue what to do.The truck still isn't back on the road , we now owe the company almost $2000.00 in advances( to pay for the hotel and 1 meal a day for my husband) My question is, what goes on now.Are the police even trying to find the person?Should we be calling to get updates?My husband says let insurance people handle it, but they are not paying out future income to just not be homeless while waiting for our rig to be done.We are lease operators.I am all but flat broke at home with 2 kids and the bills are going to be overdue in a week(with owing the company what will be at least $2500.00 I don't see them getting paid) not to mention feeding the kids and normal needed toiletries.So WHAT do you do when this happens or are we just screwed? Thanks for reading,
@FLbeachbuni

Call your insurance company, probably through your lease company. They should be paying for down time and motels.
He should be finding out how soon the truck will be road worthy. The insurance won't want to pay for any motels after that.
Consider how much you have already actual asset value you have in the truck (not what you have invested) compared to just giving the truck back to the lease company. Might be worth, just going to another truck or trucking company. Keep in mind, if you stick with that lease purchase, you will loose the deductable unless they find the 4 wheeler and if he has insurance. -
I would first talk to the company and see if they can help. I would also check to see if the weigh station has camera's and if they can identify the car that hit your husband. I am surprised the car could be driven with that much damage to the truck. If you can find the owner of the car and get to their insurance company, you might work something out, but I doubt they will want to part with any money unless it is tied to a settlement. You are in a bad situation, especially with the children. I remember reading about an organization that helps drivers who get hurt or in need on the road. I don't know if this would qualify. Off hand, I don't remember the name of the organization. If someone here is not familiar with them, you might call OOIDA and ask if they are familiar with the organization. Their main number is 816-229-5791. Their website is www.ooida.com. Good luck. I hope your husband can get the truck out of the shop soon.

Maybe someone can post links or phone numbers to places that help families in need.

I was surprised too.I find it amazing how the bad seeds get away with everything and the good, hardworking folks get shafted
Thanks for the tidbit.googling like a mad woman right now and got 1 phone call out already.Thank you all so much for reading and replying :smt049Dna Mach Thanks this. -
It's easy, drop in a head light, fix the bumper, it seems you need a bracket and the plastic cover. Cut rip off the fairing and fuel tanks, if need be just get a basic tank with the steps built in and mount them up. Then, you're on the road. It's not done perfect, but this is no time to waste if you're going broke.

It would be the other parties insurance that would pay your down time and other expenses. Right now I'm sorry to say your not going to get anything without finding that car. Man, he really creamed him! Glad he's ok.

Tell him to clean out the truck; he can tell them "I'll be in touch", hitch hike home and find a new job. -
Thanks. And yeah simple fix IF you have access to pay for all that and the tools and place to put it on... The insurance adjuster and shop have deducted that it is costing us $12,400 and No we don't have 12 grand just sitting there.
