I see a lot of trailers with plastic hanging out of the door seals. Mostly seems like roll-up doors. If I guessed I would say the doors don't seal and the plastic seals it from the elements, but I wanted to know for sure. Is it a jury-rigged door seal and if so why do I see so
many like this? Why not just fix it?

In my experience with roll-up door reefer loads, many times each pallet is covered with a big plastic bag, usually much bigger that the pallet. The last two pallets sometimes the excess plastic sticks out from under the door. Hard to push it inside due to air pressure from the reefer unit running.

It is to keep the contents dry from moisture. The roll up door tends to let some water in when it rains

I worked 31 yrs.'. for B&W Tobacco Corp, (Lou, Ky. & Macon, Ga.)our shipping department gave up on getting dry vans so started using Hugh plastic bags to seal the load. They would run fans at the back of the trailer to inflate the bag, it would completely fill the trailer. They could then drive in the forklifts with the palletized cases. Sometimes you would have plastic showing at the doors.

Plastic is a whole lot cheaper than a damaged cargo claim. That s why you see a lot of FedEx and UPS with plastic hanging out of back.

For a week I worked loading trailers at Johnson Controls in El Paso. It was the fabric seat covers for cars. They were all floor loaded. We would set up a plastic liner in the trailer, vacuum the air from between the trailer wall and the liner, and load the seat covers. When done we shut off the vacuum pumps and let the plastic liner cover the cargo. Often a bit hung out of the end of a trailer.

We used to lay it on the floor and load the freight on top. In the "old days" the floors were wood planks and leaked or possibly leaked from underneath as in driving in rainy weather. You can lay a sheet down in 20 seconds VS sweeping out the trailer which takes 10-15 min. Multiply this by 100 trailers, do you think you're saving some time in a 10 hr shift ?

A lot of plastic you see hanging off the rear covering the lights is just a moisture barrier and if you see it covering the lights it means the driver is too lazy to cut it off.
