You see those signs when driving through small towns all the time telling you No Brake.
I have heard other trucks using it unmuffled and can understand why the sign is there. Can other vehicles hear when it is muffled though? Can a cop right beside you tell you are using the break when muffled?
Even when it is loud as hell do you still get in trouble for ignoring that sign?
Ever get a ticket for using your engine brake?

With new trucks today, it's not a problem. Eventually they will be a thing of the past(the signs).
-
I usually see those signs on a downhill slope leading into a town. It is to laugh. My truck runs the engine brake thru the muffler, it's not noisy. I think mostly the police would write an unmuffled (loud) truck. Still, if I run into right officer and the wrong time..... I do what's safe, and for me that means using my engine brake to support my air brakes, especially on downhill situations. And that's the card I'll play if I get that interview.

Yeah those signs are pretty much aimed at the ones with 1 foot diameter pipes that leave it on 24 / 7 and can be heard by Everyone within a mile ...cause it sounds SOOO KEEEEWL!

A lot of those laws were passed when trucks still ran naturally aspirated Detroit 318 engines with straight pipes. They were really loud when the Jake brake was on.

I got stopped and threatened with a ticket in a small OK town. I have 5 inch pipes with mufflers but Detroits are loud. I was 93 foot long and 15.5 wide and the only place I could stop was in the road, I told the cop he was a idiot for for making me stop on the highway, had he caused a accident it probably got pretty nasty.

Just a straight pipe ticket in Kali back before most of you were driving.
