I interviewed with a company, road tested, passed a physical and drug screen, and am told I have a conditional offer of employment. What are they doing , just verifying I am who I say I am ?? If you have a conditional offer you basically have it unless you failed to disclose a felony or something , right ?

Yes it means that they will hire you if everything you told them is true and there are no skeletons that will show up, Also you will have to meet any other requirement they may have.
gpsman Thanks this. -
Once you get in there for orientation, that's when they will really take a close look at you... and likely give you another drug test. Don't hide anything, because if/when they discover something they don't like, they'll send you packing at your own expense. No free bus ticket home in most of those cases.
Good luck and Merry Christmas!gpsman Thanks this. -
Conditional means you are not hired until they hand you the keys!

Yes; they are just waiting on your background check, reference check, drug test results, etc... once everything THEY are required to do is done, and there's no discrepancies in their findings versus what you have reported...it is time to punch the clock.
P.S.- They will most likely NOT give you another drug test, unless there is something wrong with the first one. I don't know where that even comes from. -
A lot of the background checks and drug screens may take 2 weeks or more to get back. Sometimes employment verification requests are not back in full. You will be probationary status for a given time, meaning essentially they can "fire you, at will" and you can't come back on them for pay, unemployment claim, worker rights violations, etc, until such time they have received back all they might be waiting for and all is well [enough].
There is a limit to how long they can keep you on probationary status, depending on state of hire (orientation) and state of residency. A Conditional Offer simply means you seem to be qualified to enter probationary employee status ("hired") -
It is designed to keep you from looking elsewhere while they take their time looking you over. When you get to orientation you have your road test. Then, assuming you passed that, they may have everything together and you should be good to go. I hope.

Oh sorry it's a bit different than an OTR company in this case; it's for a local company. Had an interview, then a road test, then a drug test and DOT physical. Just waiting for corporate to clear me I guess.
-
They are checking your past employment and references to see if anything comes up. That would be my guess.

With a lot of companies you are not officially hired until you successfully complete orientation.
