I was reading another thread on here (unrelated) that mentioned about Ontario being the shortest route from New York to Michigan and visa versa... Now I already know this is the shortest route... Not that I drive into the US anymore (in fact I don't go very far in Ontario), but I was just curious as to what the procedure is with the paperwork, since the load isn't being delivered to Canada... Do you still have declare the items and use the PARS and PAPS system since your going into Canada and then back into the US.. Or is there a different way you declare these items as only traveling thru Canada to get to another state..

Like I said I am out of the OTR stuff, I am just a curious and the other thread just sparked my interested in asking..

There's another thread on here about transiting this way. Basically you get a seal on one side, and they check the seal on the other. Bottom line was that the time it takes to make the border crossings usually negates any benefit gained from the shorter distance.

Not really.. If you cross the border at the correct time you will cross without line ups.. Let says at night it's less busy (went on a few runs with a buddy a few months ago for fun)...

Even without the time saved.. I would think your still saving in the mileage, wear&tear, and fuel... Probably even with wait times I would think you will still save some time... Then again I don't cross any more so maybe the border times are terrible now and days during the daytime..

15 years ago we used "In-Transit" forms, not sure what they use today.

Running teams, two of us left Toronto to go to Regina. We went through northern Ontario, the other truck went In-Transit via Sarnia, Chicago, North Portal. We got to Regina a whole 15 minutes ahead of the U.S. truck.

So I'm with windsmith on this one.

Carrier has to be US Bonded in order to do that.

My customs broker tells me I need to be bonded.

Depends on where in NY, but I seriously doubt there is any time savings IN MOST CASES when you factor in the traffic in the GTA.

Worst case scenario would be Massena, NY to Port Huron, MI. 459 miles via ON versus 720 miles through NY, OH. It would be worth it in that case. Fuel and driver savings would be ~$350 but don't forget to factor in the speed limiter issue for US trucks.......that is a potential $400 fine and there are 5 Ontario scalehouses on that route IIRC.

I don't know about this particular crossing, but to state what is perhaps obvious - you need a passport or enhanced CDL and no arrests of misdemeanor or felony in your history to enter Canada. Old DWIs, DUIs, pot bust as a kid - those types of things can prevent passage into Canada. Apparently the border guards can access all ones old sins very quickly.

My company always sent me via US routes to MI. I have nothing to hide, but I never complained. The free showers at the very clean, modern and often a place to park service plazas in OH were a bonus too.
