A friend of mine sent me this picture. I asked him if its loaded, he said yes. I asked with what? He said liquids. I asked if he tapped the area with a rubber mallet. He said yah the frame wobbles and the sound echoes. I said don't take that trailer. He said its a forced dispatch. And I said, drive carefully and take it to the nearest weigh station, tell the dot your hauling death ;D

Ok for the people that don't get the type of damage. You never ever want to haul a trailer like this. The center point is damaged and is probably broken. The nuts inside are probably misplaced and thats definetly not going to stop a load shift, but the load will bust out. The dented frame wobbling and metal sound echoing means that, that area in the frame is misplaced.

Same thing with dents on the corners of the bulk head. You have to look at the trailer to see if the top frame is leaning back. If its leaning back, then the bottom bulk head screws are loose. Can you haul a trailer like this? Of course you can, but you'll be surprised when you drive for about 20 miles, look at your mirror and see that your hauling a flat bed instead ;D.

It's never a forced dispatch if your pre-trip inspection uncovers safety issues.

Imagine if another trucker just hooked to this trailer and didnt do an inspection at all ;D. The load is going to be everywhere when he takes a sharp right curve. It would be much worse if the trailer is loaded with them 7 foot tall paper rolls ;D

Forced dispatch doesn't matter when it comes to unsafe equipment. Anything happens he will be held responsible for knowingly using unsafe equipment. Document ever little thing with that trailer, including trailer #, vin #, license plate, BOL or seal #, etc... And take pictures along with all defects and then report it to safety as to why you are refusing unsafe equipment. Any retaliation for refusing to use unsafe equipment, such as penalties/termination, can have legal consequences for the company.

Since when are scratches in the side of a trailer a safety issue? If that was the case, every trailer on the road would be put OOS.

Hi Bakerman, I hear ya'. I can't tell, is it bowed out or something? I heard, as long as the bottom rail (where the braces are riveted to the rail) on van or reefer are ok, it's not a hazard. Like you say, when I hauled RR trailers, they all looked like that. The load that made me quit RR trailers, ( although, I was going to quit anyway) I was dispatched on a load of peat moss in bags, and the dispatcher said, it might be heavy. When I found the wagon, there were 2 dents on each side on the bottom rails where the crane lifted it off the flat car. I backed under it, and ooph, I could tell right away it was heavy. My drivers axle load gauge said almost 100 lbs. ( 64 lbs was 34,000) I said, screw this, pulled the pin, and bobtailed home, and quit the next day. When I called the company telling them my plate was in the mail, I asked, what ever happened to that load of peat moss. She said, she dispatched it to someone else, and they hauled it.:biggrin_25513:

LOL! Look very carefully at the picture, you might need to zoom in. Of course its not the scratch, but the frame is dented in. It means that area, that center point is weak. The nuts and metal pieces that hold the top frame to the bottom frame is damaged.
